Position Summary

This person oversees all activities involving the Psychological Services Center (PSC), a university-based training clinic that is part of the Clinical Training Program in the Department of Psychology. The Director plays a key role in educating graduate students in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program in the appropriate and effective use of psychotherapeutic interventions for a range of mental health related conditions. The Director supervises all day-to-day activities at the PSC and coordinates its ongoing relationship with teaching and research activities of the department. The functions of the PSC are integrated with the training and research goals of the program and its core faculty members. The Director facilitates and helps to maintain this integration. Assessment and treatment procedures at the clinic must meet a uniformly high standard in terms of empirical validity and must be compatible with the clinical science model of training in clinical psychology. The Director manages the activities and maintains these standards.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures smooth operation of the Psychological Services Center (PSC).

  • Maintains highest professional standards for PSC activities with regard to ethical and legal status of student therapists and their professional behavior (e.g., ensure liability coverage is adequate in all cases).

  • Manages the clinical service representative (PSC front desk).

  • Monitors completion of student documentation.

  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA processes and procedures.

  • Serves as primary money handler for weekly deposits.

  • Serves as "check and balance" for monthly billing on all charts.

  • Engages in coordination and consultation with other offices, departments, and external individuals as needed (e.g., insurance, risk management, general counsel, facilities, Institutional Review Board).

  • Monitors national listservs and news outlets for program-relevant changes.

  • Directs and maintains all PSC records (paper and electronic), including patient folders as well as billing statements. This includes setting fees, supervising collection, monitoring financial accounts, and preparing an Annual Report for the department.

  • Manages the physical facility and all elements associated with its use by clients, graduate students, and faculty members. Handles arrangements regarding parking, cleaning, and other operations.

  • Maintains the physical facilities at the PSC, including all video and computer equipment.

  • Teaches at least one course per semester (often a graduate course in the clinical training program, such as Introduction to Psychological Treatments) and assists in the coordination of other teaching activities, such as the weekly clinical science seminar as well as beginning assessment and therapy experiences associated with other graduate courses.

  • Teaches empirically supported psychotherapeutic approaches to graduate student therapists. This includes direct responsibility for several students during the academic year (didactic and supervisory) as well as primary supervisory responsibility during the summer months. Coordinates student assignments to other core faculty supervisors as well as psychologists who serve as practicum supervisors from the community.

  • Provides clinical supervision of psychological assessments and psychotherapy to a team of up to four PhD students.

  • Meets two hours per week with team members throughout the year (twelve months) to discuss clinical cases, conceptualization and intervention.

  • Provides instruction in professional foundational and functional competencies, including instruction in the provision of empirically-supported treatments.

  • Reviews recordings of sessions to ensure quality control for patients and assist with concrete feedback to students.

  • Reviews trainee written intake reports, progress notes, termination summaries, and other documentation; provides constructive feedback on this documentation until it meets standards for patient charting.

  • Provides systematic reviews and feedback to students on development of professional competencies.

  • Maintains current professional license.

  • Provides clinical consultation to other students, staff, and faculty, as needed.

  • Provides on-call crisis intervention support to any student, as needed.

  • Mentors and supervises a graduate assistant (typically one per year) and an undergraduate intern (typically one per semester, plus summer) in brief assessment, risk management, crisis intervention, and clinic administration.

  • Assists with other teaching responsibilities as needed, in consultation with the DCT and clinical faculty.

  • Administers External Practicum.

  • Identifies and creates new external practicum opportunities.

  • Assists students with identifying their training goals, then selecting and placing at external practica that fit with those goals.

  • Serves as the liaison between external practica and the program to ensure quality training at the site and satisfactory performance by the students.

  • Solicits and organizes systematic feedback from practicum sites regarding student performance.

  • Solicits and organizes systematic feedback from students about practicum sites and supervisors.

  • Administers External Clinical Supervisors.

  • Identifies and recruits practicing psychologists as clinical mentors.

  • Orients and communicates with these clinical mentors to ensure they provide supervision consistent with the clinical science training philosophy of our program.

  • Assists students with selecting clinical mentors that align with their training goals.

  • Serves as the liaison between clinical mentors and the program to ensure quality supervision and satisfactory performance by the student.

  • Solicits and organizes systematic feedback from clinical mentors regarding student performance.

  • Solicits and organizes systematic feedback from students about clinical mentors.

  • Provides guidance to students on clinical internships.

  • Develops and disseminates information for students at all stages of the program about preparing for and applying for clinical internships.

  • In collaboration with the DCT, prepares outgoing cohort for internship applications and interviews.

  • Writes letters of support for internship applications.

  • Maintains ongoing records regarding internship outcomes.

  • Conducts program evaluation by monitoring student learning throughout the program and reviewing student outcomes post-graduation.

  • Identifies and coordinates speakers for Clinical Science Seminar that occurs weekly throughout the academic year.

  • Participates in clinical faculty meetings throughout the year to discuss curricular matters and student progress.

  • Administers the external practicum program and external clinical supervisors and internships.

  • Assists the Director of Clinical Training with accreditation processes and requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of clinical experience.

  • Previous teaching and supervisory experience with regard to assessment and treatment procedures for various types of mental disorder.

  • Previous experience in the delivery of mental health services.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on investigations that are concerned broadly with clinical psychology or more specifically with the development and evaluation of mental health services.

  • Excellent clinical skills, a commitment to teaching and research, management skills.

  • Advanced knowledge in, and experience with, the delivery of professional psychological services, including assessment and treatment.

  • Identifying appropriate agencies and professionals in the community who are willing to provide support for PSC activities (e.g., referrals, supervision, and so on).

  • Screening clients whose problems are inappropriate for treatment at the PSC (and identifying problems that arise with on-going cases, e.g., crisis intervention).

  • Manages difficult situations involving clients, student therapists, and faculty supervisors.

  • Troubleshoots problems that arise with regard to accounting and billing, electronic equipment, and so on.

Required Qualifications

The Director must have a Ph.D. in psychology and must have completed a suitable internship experience in clinical psychology from an accredited training program. He or she must be licensed to practice psychology in Missouri. If this license is temporary, obtaining permanent licensure within six months will be a condition of further employment. The Director may also be, at hiring, eligible to apply for licensure in Missouri; obtaining licensure within six months will, in this case, be a condition of further employment. In this instance, the Director will be supervised by a licensed psychologist on faculty and will not assume supervisory roles for student therapists until licensure is obtained.

Salary Range

$82,500.00 - $145,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
