Summary/Scope

Director of Protein Sciences is a high impact leadership position. We seek a highly collaborative, motivated and innovative candidate with demonstrated expertise to provide scientific and technological leadership in protein design, production and biophysical/analytical characterization to enable biologics drug discovery and development. Qualified candidate will effectively operate in a "distributed drug discovery model" to enable advancement of biologics programs in multiple therapeutic areas, including oncology, inflammation and neurodegeneration. Key responsibilities include, manage a protein sciences team focused on the production and characterization of monoclonal antibodies, multi-specifics, antibody drug conjugates (ADC) and other protein therapeutics using state-of-art technology and an industry competitive DNA to protein production process. Contribute to research by managing scientific and technical activities based on an understanding of Research and Early development (R&ED) discovery and development needs. Initiate, present and defend research proposals to relevant project teams and governance committees within R&ED. Work with the leadership of various Thematic Centers of Excellence and function on creative approaches to discover high impact biologics. Maintains an external publication record and collaborative interactions with external experts in the field.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide insights/expertise to the strategy and implement the discovery of high quality biotherapeutics candidates

  • Operationalize an efficient state-of-art protein drug discovery platforms to produce and characterize monoclonal- and bispecific antibodies, fusion proteins and ADCs

  • Apply protein structural and biophysical principles to optimize protein function, stability and manufacturability of therapeutic candidates

  • Identify and implement new technologies/applications/external collaborations in support of research goals; interface with new technology providers. Participate in licensing and technology evaluation teams.

  • Manage the workflow of protein production and characterization unit to ensure quality, priorities and timelines.

  • Recruit, retain, and develop high quality staff; manage performance of direct and indirect reports

  • Supervise laboratory personnel in the execution of bench level activities

  • Identify and manage contract research laboratory for biologics discovery

Experience/Knowledge/Skills Required:

  • Ph.D. in relevant field with in depth training in protein sciences, protein-protein interaction, protein and membrane biochemistry and biophysics

  • Minimum 12 years of experience in biologics drug discovery and development in biotech/pharmaceuticals

  • Three (3) years of managerial, leadership and supervisory skills at the Director level in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Subject matter expert in biologics discovery, protein structural biology and protein chemistry

  • Able to work independently as well as in a multi-discipline team environment

  • Ability to interface effectively with business partners

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to multi-task; support multiple projects and set priorities based on business needs

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Protein Homeostasis at Celgene The PH TCoE at Celgene is one of the fundamental research and early development engines delivering therapeutics to patients. The group integrates discovery research through translational and early clinical development and focuses on numerous aspects of protein homeostasis including the ubiquitin-proteasome system, protein translation, and RNA processing and stability. This thematic focus allows the group to capitalize on the cutting edge science that underpins the action of the company's most advanced drugs. Not being bound by disease area or therapeutic modality creates a very dynamic, exciting and creative environment that exploits excellent science in biology, biochemistry, structural biology, computational biology and translational development. Summary/Scope We seek an experienced drug-hunter with a proven track record of success. Candidates will be highly motivated and accomplished life scientists or medicinal chemists with experience in the pharma / biotech sectors. The successful candidate will lead an early drug discovery team and manage matrixed project teams charged with delivering drug candidates. She/he will contribute to a variety of programs by setting strategies, priorities, and driving critical path drug discovery objectives. Candidates with oncology industry experience and demonstrated record of drug discovery required. Knowledge in E3 ligase and UPS biology and chemistry a plus. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: * Collaborate, motivate, and mentor matrixed teams empowered to implement protein homeostasis TCoE discovery programs from target identification to development candidate nomination. An emphasis in biology / chemistry data integration, setting strategies, and "big picture" thinking is key. * Lead a team of 8 Scientists and Research Associates engaged in target and drug discovery efforts focused on identifying new therapies for cancer treatment. * Effectively collaborate with a fully integrated multidisciplinary team comprised of both internal and external resources to facilitate the success of projects. * Evaluate and implement novel and emerging technologies to advance drug discovery effort. * Regular communication with Senior Management around portfolio progression, strategy, and goal setting ensuring scientific excellence and rigor. * Provide direction and lead the execution of multiple projects, including program design, assay development, in-vitro proof-of-concept, and in vivo translational studies. * Excellent leadership capabilities with at least five years of experience guiding and motivating successful teams, as well as building and managing productive research collaborations. Experience/Knowledge/Skills Required: * Ph.D. with at least 12 years of drug discovery experience and 5 years of management and successful project leadership experience. * Significant oncology experience and managing Ph.D level reports required. * Excellent experimental design, troubleshooting, and data analysis skills. * Demonstrate strong analytical skills * Ability to work well as an individual and in a team environment * Strong verbal and written communication skills * Very strong communication and partnering skills.
