The primary objective of Preformulation Development (PFS) within Pharmaceutical Sciences is to enable mechanistic chemical and physical understanding and characterization of product stability across small and large molecule modalities during of product development spanning discovery through late stage product development.

The Director is responsible for leading a team of junior and senior level scientists in Kenilworth NJ to enable the R&D goals of the organization for non-GMP activities. The Director and his/her team are responsible for the development and application of biochemical and biophysical analytical methods supporting large molecule characterization. The successful Director will work with their team to use these methods to enable rapid decision making and inform formulation design and process development.

The Director reports to the Executive Director of Preformulation science and will lead staff who work within multidisciplinary product development teams. The Director drives scientific excellence and must excel in leading innovative scientific research with focus on external presentations and publications. The Director will create, influence, and support the direction of Pharmaceutical Sciences innovation and research initiatives.

The Director will work in collaboration with other preclinical development functions across small and large molecule modalities including formulation development, biologics upstream/downstream development, and analytical sciences in order to translate research to clinical formulation development and ultimately, final formulations.

The Director will identify, recruit, onboard and develop employees to their full potential. Further they will contribute and establish a viable succession plan for key positions within the functional area (scientific and management pathways), including their own role. The Director selects, trains, mentors and carries out performance management of their staff under direction within the framework of Company policy.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • 10+years, Ph.D. in biochemistry or related technical pharmaceutical science
  • 15+years, MS/BS in biochemistry or related technical pharmaceutical science
Required Experience and

Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability in leading a research team.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

  • Strength in delivering results on firm deadlines in support of development programs

Preferred Experience and

Skills:
  • Experience with biophysical higher order structure characterization and mass spectrometry

  • Strong background in authoring appropriate regulatory filings and responses

  • Active participation in external forums

This position is responsible for leading and managing one or more portfolios of Merck for Mother's programmatic activities. This position will define and develop the long term portfolio strategy, launch initiatives to fulfill the strategy, direct and oversee programmatic execution and manage external partnerships to ensure desired results are delivered. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. * Successful Execution of Programs * Direct the efforts of 5-10 internal and external Program Officers to ensure the successful implementation portfolio investments and achievement of the portfolio objectives; helping to triage issues and provide guidance and decision making on solutions * Liaise with the MfM Executive Director to ensure portfolio programs and projects are aligned strategically and technically * Define, develop and execute key domestic and international programmatic investment portfolios with a value of $10-20MM ; This position will lead the project selection process and the implementation and on-going monitoring and reporting of these grants and partnerships * Lead efforts to engage Merck expertise from across the business to strengthen MfM programs including the support of Global Health Fellows and Expert Advisors * Serves as subject matter expert for technical matters to assist with communications and employee engagement efforts * * Partnership Management/ Stakeholder Engagement * Lead relationship management efforts with strategic partners, key internal and external stakeholders, consultants and agencies. Establishes partnership objectives and manages progress against those objectives. * Acts as key contract for stakeholders, including responding to stakeholder inquiries both internally and externally * Represents Merck for Mothers at conferences, public speaking events and key meetings. * Ensures successful execution and sustainability of programmatic work through close collaboration with external partners located in countries where programs are being executed. Leads frequent communications with partners to maintain focus on progress. * Identifies opportunities for executive level partnerships and platforms for advancing Merck for Mothers objectives – including development of supporting justification, cases for change and strategies. * Relationship Management * Internal | Initiates and manages relationships with local MSD subsidiary teams in assigned countries, relevant franchises, Global Communications, Corporate Responsibility and Merck Foundation to ensure alignment of objectives * External | Establishes and manages relationships with external partners (local Government Ministries of Health & Ministries of Finance, United States Department of State, United Nations organizations, donor organizations, non-governmental organizations, community leaders and other key opinion leaders); build external network of subject matter experts, influential stakeholders, the general public and Merck employees in the further advancement of MfM local programs and efforts related to reducing maternal mortality globally * Program Development * Conduct due diligence/landscaping assessments in field to determine potential program investment alignment with MfM program strategy and objectives * Direct Program Officers to help evaluate new scopes of work. Develop and execute advocacy strategy for the portfolio in collaboration with MfM's Advocacy lead * Support other advocacy efforts – work closely with the MfM Program Technical Writer to identify communication opportunities * Lead MfM engagement of certain marquee events such as Women Deliver and other leading maternal health events * Represent MfM in high visibility public engagements Qualifications Education Minimum Requirement: * BS degree in a technical or health-related field Required Experience and Skills: * Minimum of 10 yrs work experience Preferred Experience and Skills: * MPH or similar advanced degree strongly desired (MD/PhD optional) * Technical or subject matter expertise in population health * A minimum of five (5) years' experience working in organizations and/or donor agencies that focus on global health or maternal health * International experience working with NGOs, governments and/or multilaterals in roles of increasing responsibility * Experience in working in low resource setting environments – particularly in the capacity of global health * Successful track record managing partnerships and working with donors * Successful track record managing program budgets * Strong project management skills Communication Skills: * Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write routine correspondence, and to effectively present information in a one-on-one, small or large group situations, to executives, government officials, customers, clients and associates and on public platforms.
