Why this job is important

Sickle Cell Disease is a serious and progressive genetic disease that affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States alone. The single genetic mutation in the beta-globin gene leads to a range of debilitating SCD complications which result in significant morbidity and healthcare utilization, poor QoL, high psychosocial burden, and early mortality. The need for a transformative treatment is urgent and critical. At bluebird bio, we believe gene therapy holds promise to make hope a reality for patients and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease.

However, for this therapy to reach the people that need it, there are a number of commercialization challenges to overcome. One of the most critical will be to educate people who have the disease and their caregivers on a potentially transformative one-time gene therapy treatment. The Associate Director or Director of Patient Marketing for Sickle Cell Disease will help shape the way we introduce this innovation to patients and caregivers.

In this role, examples of what you will need to deliver:

  • Deep insights. Understand key drivers and barriers of patient and caregiver behavior and how healthcare or other key stakeholders influence decision making. Assess how the competitive and treatment landscape will change the perceived need for a gene therapy product and identify key strategic implications

  • Strategy. Identify and build strategic options and imperatives for launch

  • Execution. Prioritize tactics to achieve strategic imperatives. Establish and track key metrics of progress. Define, gain alignment on, and manage budget required to support execution.

  • Leadership. Earn trust and respect of other subject matter experts. Ensure compliance of all activity and deliverables. Communicate effectively and clearly. Collaborate with other subject matter experts to execute multi-dimensional deliverables. Deliver on-time and within budget.

Consider joining us in this role if you are

  • Committed to commercializing innovative treatments to help patients

  • Comfortable not knowing the answer and relentlessly working to figure it out

  • Passionate about figuring out what needs to get done and getting it done

  • Courageous in taking risks and building contingency plans to mitigate those risks

  • Humble enough to recognize the value of others expertise and actively seek to partner with other subject matter experts to solve complex problems

  • Naturally curious and enjoy synthesizing diverse sets of data to form insights

  • Not afraid of adapting the plan as meaningful insights emerge

  • A believer that cell and gene therapies have the potential to transform the lives of people who live with seriously debilitating diseases

  • Committed to finding a way for new, disruptive therapies to reach the people who they were designed to help

  • Excited to be a part of scaling and building the infrastructure, systems and people power to ensure we can make hope a reality for many patients in the years to come

Minimum experience we look for:

  • Bachelors degree in health care related field or equivalent practical experience
