The Director of the Padnos College of Engineering (PCE) Advising Center is responsible for organizing the operation of a full-scale professional advising program in the College. The Director leads a team of professional advising staff in the coordination and delivery of academic advising services to students pursuing majors and/or minors in the Padnos College of Engineering. The Director also supports PCE K-12 outreach efforts in collaboration with the PCE Outreach Coordinator. This position collaborates with campus partners to develop, enhance, and implement a comprehensive array of academic advising services that are available to all students and that positively impact student retention and success at GVSU. These partners include, but are not limited, to: academic units and faculty across the college; other college advising centers; Admissions; Registrar; Financial Aid; Student Academic Success Center; Disability Support Services; student success programming across the university; affinity groups; and other academic colleges and units. The Director of the PCE Advising Center also understands and embraces the complex administrative structures at a public comprehensive institution and works to develop strong partnerships with constituencies across campus.

Primary Duties

  • Strengthen the mission, vision, and goals of the PCE Advising Center, in collaboration with key stakeholders and partners, and ensure that it embraces and values a shared commitment to provide equitable, inclusive, and effective advising services for all students.

  • Build advising services that are inclusive of the needs of the diverse student population at GVSU, with specific attention directed towards closing gaps in access and success for underrepresented students.

  • Administer the day-to-day operations and supervisory responsibilities for the Center, including the supervision of professional advising staff, support staff, graduate assistants and student employees.

  • Work collaboratively with the Center staff, faculty, unit heads and other campus partners to develop and implement early alert campaigns to engage students with advising, as well as the effective delivery of wrap around advising services to all PCE students.

  • Partner with the PCE K-12 Outreach Coordinator on college and university outreach efforts and summer camps.

  • Identify and implement critical outreach campaigns to students experiencing academic difficulties and provide timely and effective intervention strategies to increase student success and retention. Specific attention to be paid to underrepresented students in collaboration with other support services across campus.

  • Coordinate the assignment of professional academic advisors to all PCE students, as well as lead the Center's efforts to meet with all new-to-GVSU students during their first year.

  • Coordinate the Center's involvement in new student advising and registration sessions for first year, transfer, and international students. Interpret, disseminate and apply all university and college standards and policies as they pertain to student records, degree, major and graduation requirements. Use these policies to identify potential solutions to student issues.

  • Provide intentional, individualized, and meaningful supervision and professional development for the professional advising staff in the Center.

  • Manage the budget allocated to the Center and provide fiscally responsible supervision of funds.

  • Identify and utilize critical data points to evaluate the impact of advising services on the academic progress and success rate of students in achieving academic success, progressing towards graduation, and using this information to make data informed enhancements to advising services based on these trends.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master's degree in Education or related field.

  • Minimum six (6) years of experience working in higher education administration and/or academic advising areas, or a combination of related experience and degree.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated budgetary experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across academic disciplines and areas of student support.

  • Higher education experience working specifically with academic advising services resulting in increased student persistence and student retention, including closing equity gaps.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in providing constructive and supportive supervision to a diverse staff of students, team members and support staff.

  • Skilled in the use of varying types of student support technology such as Banner, Microsoft suite, EAB - Navigate or other student software.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in the theory and practice of enhancing the academic success of first-generation and underrepresented students.

  • Possess the NACADA Academic Advising Certificate or a Master's degree in Academic Advising.

  • Experience in the Appreciative Advising model.

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in K-12 outreach.

Working Conditions

Normal office environment. Some travel may be required. May require work hours beyond the typical 40-hour work week and outside of the 8:00am - 5:00pm work day.

CAMPUS: Grand Rapids

SALARY: Minimum Starting $68,000; commensurate with experience
