POSITION SUMMARY:

Plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the organizational and administrative operations of the Transportation Department and the work of subordinates; estimates and requisitions supplies, and equipment needed, oversee school bus routing, maintains accurate and current records of operations and cost; prepare and submit reports; establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with the public and District personnel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises and monitors the day-to-day operations, evaluates transportation personnel (Mechanics, Drivers, Monitors, etc.).

  • Develops and updates bus routes and schedules; makes notifications to those needing to know of updated routes and schedules; coordinates transportation for extracurricular events (sports, field trips, etc.); responds to after hour emergency calls; and operates a school bus in the event of emergency or shortage of drivers

  • Implements all federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and System Board Policy as it pertains to the system's transportation department; compiles and maintains all records required for transportation; enforce all safety standards that conform with federal, state, and insurance regulations.

  • Provides training for support personnel.

  • Responds to accidents as necessary.

  • Manages the coordination of school day routes for regular and special needs education, after-school routes, and summer school routes.

  • Manages and updates the map in the routing software with updated street information, street speed, hazard status, and direction of travel.

  • Administers transportation budget and ensures that the program is cost-effective, and funds are managed wisely; and prepares data necessary to process payroll and attendance monthly.

  • Schedules state inspections yearly; oversees plan for monthly inspections of each bus; keeps records on bus shop orders: and turns in signed invoices for parts and services monthly.

  • Advises Superintendent of inclement weather and/or road hazards; and develops a team and gathers information for bus accident investigations.

  • Attend and make presentations at conferences and school board meetings; be a part of professional organizations which provide professional growth in transportation; and maintain good rapport with all transportation stakeholders of the school system.

  • Handle any or other duties assigned by the Superintendent.

  • Acts as the liaison with the software routing company.

  • Assists in providing information for the State Superintendent's report.

  • Manages the operation of the Dispatch Operations Centers.

  • Creates dispatch procedures and guidelines.

  • Plan, organize, and support the operations of the district's vehicle maintenance programs.

  • Makes recommendations that affect the transportation activities of the district.

  • Requisition and purchases transportation supplies.

  • All other duties, as assigned and required, to perform the above services.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required; master's degree preferred.

  • Five (5) years of responsible experience in transportation, including two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

  • Prior experience in the coordination of a K-12 District or large organization transportation department.

  • Hold a Georgia Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes, the Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement.

  • A moderate level of judgment required.

  • Requires regular, frequent contact with internal personnel of influence and decision-making responsibility to discuss issues of moderate importance.

  • Requires excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate effectively

  • Applies, recommends, and implements technology concepts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Transportation Department.

  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • Work in standard office and school building environments.

  • Manage a high stress workload that includes supervising multiple employees and multiple routes
