Reporting to the COO, this role will serve as the subject matter expert for Steel Technologies, collaborating with sales, purchasing, operations, and other departments to ensure safety & compliance, operational excellence, cost efficiency, and superior customer service.

This role has direct reporting positions in the corporate office and indirect reporting positions in facilities across the USA and Canada.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement long-term strategic plans for fleet operations, aligning with business objectives and market demands.

  • Oversee the development and enforcement of fleet safety and compliance standards, policies, and procedures. Ensure adherence to US DOT, state, and local regulations.

  • Lead initiatives to optimize delivery network efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and enhance customer satisfaction. Develop strategies for operational improvements and ensure successful deployment.

  • Foster collaboration between sales, operations, and other departments to streamline operations and management processes.

  • Utilize data collection and analysis for operational and financial reporting. Ensure accurate compliance, mileage, and tax filings as required by federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Champion customer solutions related to logistics, addressing issues and opportunities promptly to enhance customer relationships.

  • Lead driver retention and recruitment efforts in collaboration with Human Resources. Promote a positive and engaging work environment. Develop and administer overall driver compensation strategy.

  • Develop and implement programs and training to reduce fleet accidents and improve driver safety.

  • Competitively bid common delivery routes to outside carriers on a routine basis. Work to grow our base of qualified, reliable outside carriers.

  • Routinely analyze value comparison of company truck versus outside carriers.

  • Negotiate annual rail service agreements and seek to expand rail usage to reduce overall freight cost.

  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of direct reporting positions. Establish appropriate goals that are in alignment with company objectives and drive accountability.

  • Mentor and provide direction for indirect reporting positions (shipping managers at remote facilities), ensuring that corporate strategies are understood and implemented across the platform.

  • Recommend capital expenditures to support fleet replacement as needed. Develop strategy, including regular maintenance and fuel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in fleet safety and compliance (FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, state regulations), multi-site fleet operations, distribution, and fleet management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

  • Proven track record of successful leadership, strategic planning, and implementation. Ability to influence, manage and motivate a diverse team

  • Strong business evaluation techniques and analytical skills. Ability to develop and apply data-driven strategies

  • Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively interacting with all levels of the organization, from plant-level employees to corporate executives

  • Innovative thinker with strong problem-solving abilities. Ability to handle challenging situations positively

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Operates with an acute sense of integrity, professionalism, and proactive attitude. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This work is predominantly performed in an office setting with minimal to moderate noise due to computers, printers, and people. Occasionally, work will be performed in a manufacturing setting with moderate to high levels of noise due to machinery and equipment. The temperature of the facility will vary based on outside weather conditions. The use of personal protective equipment for safety compliance may be required as deemed necessary by management.
