Director of Transportation

Reports To: Superintendent or their Designee

Position Purpose: Provides professional leadership in the supervision and coordination in the area of student transportation and bus maintenance.

Responsibilities: Directly supervises employees in the transportation department. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential Functions:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily:

  • Conducts monthly school year meetings with bus drivers to maintain open lines of communications. Conducts annual safety training for all bus drivers. Conducts Back to School Night for the bus drivers prior to the beginning of school each year.

  • Coordinates all special education bussing with the Director of Special Services or their designee.

  • Oversees establishing all regular and special bus routes, schedules and stops.

  • Is responsible for maintaining compliance with the Department of Transportation regulations including the preparation for annual state school bus inspection.

  • Plans and supervises training for current and new bus drivers in the proper procedures of safety.

  • Communicates with building principals related to student behavior while at bus stops and on the bus, bus evacuation drills, and bus schedules.

  • Recommends general business policies pertaining to the purchase of equipment and supplies. Assists with the bidding process for the purchase of all vehicles, parts, supplies and materials related to the transportation department.

  • Oversee personnel functions of the department including recruitment, training, supervision, professional development, evaluations, etc.… for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing and enhancing productivity and efficiency. Including maintaining a pool of substitute drivers and new driver training.

  • Responsible for continued review of budgetary expenditures.

  • Assist with the cleaning of the Transportation and Facilities Center.

  • Assist with snow removal at any corporation facility, as needed.

  • Fosters good communication between the Transportation Department and the Superintendent regarding weather related school delays and cancellations.

  • Responds to parent concerns regarding transportation related issues in a timely manner.

  • Assists in the administration of driver drug testing

  • Assists in preparation for annual state school bus inspection

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and their designee.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. Associate's Degree with/or Technical Certificates will be considered.

  • Has three (3) or more years of supervisory experience. Strong planning, management, organizational, oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to use a computer with various software packages to accomplish all facets of the job. Prefer one year's experience using a bus routing software and establishing single and two tier bus routes.

  • Must be able to communicate via telephone, handheld radio, e-mail, letter, memorandum, and in person to vendors, school personnel, school groups, and/or the general public.

  • Must be willing and able to obtain any certifications or licenses deemed necessary by the school corporation. Prefer an individual with or the ability to obtain an Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements along with air brakes.

  • Must possess skills in human relations and have the ability to plan and organize.

  • Possess other qualifications as deemed necessary and desirable by the School Board.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and /or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, workplace hazards (possibly of cuts, bruises, dirt, odors, etc.) and temperature variations if working outside.
