Director of Transportation

Job Description:

Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency related to all transportation activities in the district. The director supervises and evaluates all personnel within the transportation department.

Reports To: Superintendent

Education/Certifications/Experience Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree required

3 years experience in related field preferred

Knowledge of school transportation issues and programs

Building Level Administration Certification, preferred

3 years experience in a school setting

Supervises: Bus Mechanics, Transportation Staff, Bus Drivers, Nurses

Salary: $61,070 - $87,299

Contract Days: 249

Performance Responsibilities:

Responsible for establishing bus routes, bus stops, and continued monitoring of bus load numbers.
Recommend for employment and/or dismissal.
Responsible for the training of new drivers and providing safety in-services for all drivers and bus aids.
Responsible for scheduling drivers and buses for field and activity trips.
Responsible for the general condition of the district's vehicles and recommends replacements and additions that should be made.
Develops bidding requirements and specifications for new school buses and equipment.
Responsible for gathering and maintaining all required insurance information pertaining to district vehicles. Processing paperwork for all accidents involving drivers and/or vehicles.
Respond to questions, concerns, and inquiries presented by drivers, district personnel and parents regarding all areas of the transportation department.
Have specific knowledge of district boundaries, school attendance areas and bus route locations.
Direct and supervise all bus drivers, shop, and office personnel.
Maintain CDL Class B license. The supervisor will serve as a substitute driver only when all other alternatives have been exhausted or in an emergency situation.
Responsible for all district and state reports pertaining to transportation.
Maintain records of daily driver's log and pre-trip forms.
Monitor safety of buses through frequent observations.
Promote and maintain open, working rapport with district drivers, administrators, principals, and district personnel.
Establish and promote safety procedures that affect route, driving standards, and shop operations.
Responsible for all areas of the drug testing program in relation to CDL license holders.
Supervise school nurses.
Act as liaison between the custodial company and the district.
Advise superintendent on road conditions for decision on school closing during inclement weather.
Act as liaison between bus driver and school administrator on discipline issues.
Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent.

Communication Skills:

Ability to write reports, send email and other business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Critical Thinking Skills:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, talk or hear; and frequently required to stand, walk, sit; occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
