Director of Technical Accounting and Reporting - Atlanta, GA1000 Abernathy Rd, NEAtlanta, Georgia, 30328United States Director Technical Accounting and Reporting Location: Atlanta, GA (North park location)The opportunity:The Director of Technical Accounting and Reporting will be a hands-on leader in the Technical Accounting team and will directly report to Sr. Director, Technical Accounting who ultimately reports to the Chief Accounting Officer. This role will require significant interaction and leadership of technical accounting implementation with key leaders in the divisional and corporate accounting function. How you will impact WestRock:This is a key leadership and very visible position in our controllership organization with global relationships and influences a broad area of responsibility. Ultimately this person is responsible for developing global accounting policies, implementation of new accounting standards, discussing accounting items that come up on a day to day basis, both of which require significant technical expertise, project management and communication skills, including the ability to work with a broad and diverse set of key individuals in the organization. Key responsibilities include:Be the second in-charge of our Technical Accounting Group and collaborates extensively with Corporate and Divisional Accounting leadership
Lead the development or out global accounting policies which would include original issuance and on-going updates as necessary
Take ownership for maintaining, tracking, and resolving all open technical accounting questions/matters as they arise from various divisions Lead the research including planning for the adoption and implementation of new standards on a global basis as well as provide guidance to the Company on existing standards including coordination with segment and corporate personnel. Ability to research complex accounting issues including formulating positions and documenting conclusions regarding the financial reporting implications to the organization; present succinct analysis / summary to senior leadership the impacts of certain technical accounting analysis or implementation
Prepare, and in certain cases review, technical memos for internal use as well as external auditors
Prepare materials and lead divisional technical accounting trainings
Prepare and review accounting memos for non-routine accounting entries such as: purchase price accounting, restructuring charges, capital contributions, pension accounting, bond offerings and buy-backs, derivatives and interest rate swap terminations, equity compensation accounting, derivative accounting and fair value accounting
Projects as needed, may include things such as preparation or assistance in the performance of goodwill and other impairment testing, purchase accounting activities for WestRock acquisitions, dispositions and special filings such as registration statements
Preparation to senior leadership of the impacts of certain technical accounting analysis or implementation
Communicate with outside auditing firm on technical accounting issues and interim/year-end close, as needed.Oversee and adhere to department policies to update and ensure quarterly and annual procedures are in compliance with required SOX control objectives. What you need to succeed:
Bachelors Degree in Accounting, MBA is a plus CPA required (active) Ten plus years of relevant work experience public accounting experience required. Desired experience consists of public accounting, at a senior manager level. Subsequent additional post public accounting experience welcome.
Experience in technical accounting advisory functions of a big 4 firm preferred, however, candidates within the audit practice will also be considered Strong understanding of US GAAP Experience in technical research including developing and guiding other to develop well thought out accounting memos/position papers Lead and drive projects to completion be it specific to accounting standards update, or any special accounting projects. Excellent communication skills ensuring cross-functional collaboration across the entity Strong analytical skills, as well as exceptional attention to detail Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, ability to meet tight deadlines Hyperion Essbase/Excel Add-In experience is a plus What we offer:Corporate culture based on integrity, respect, accountability and excellence
