Job Description:

The Director of Teacher Preparation leads, administers, and oversees the undergraduate teacher certification program in the School of Education under the supervision of the Dean. In this role, the Director has the primary responsibility for the overall operations of the undergraduate program, including pedagogical components, fieldwork experiences, and student engagement. The Director, with the assistance of field experience staff, builds and manages partnerships and fieldwork placements and works with the Dean to ensure that the School remains in compliance with all teacher accreditation requirements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Office of Teacher Preparation including Program Coordinator, Assistant Directors of Field Experience, Advisors, support staff, and student staff.

  • Audit program requirements, endorse candidates for New York State certification, and maintain all official candidate records.

  • Develop and implement quality academic services designed to meet the individualized needs of students.

  • Participate in the SOE's leadership team.

  • Assume primary responsibility for building and managing partnerships and fieldwork placements (e.g., 100 hours fieldwork, student teaching), including conversations with school district administrators, program faculty, and mentor teachers. This person works in collaboration with the graduate level teacher certification programs.

  • Oversee the recruitment, training, supervision of qualified fieldwork supervisors, in collaboration with field experience directors.

  • Provide pedagogical and instructional leadership for office staff, campus, and school-based educators.

  • Ensure that instructional practices are compliant with NYSED and SUNY Regulations and are evidence and research based; Understand and communicate placement safety/security protocols as appropriate. In collaboration with the Pathways Into Education Center, actively participate in recruitment and retention events.

  • Embrace all aspects of diversity, equity and inclusion to ensure that the office is culturally sensitive and accepting of individual differences.

  • Oversee affiliation agreements with school districts.

  • Represent the School of Education and attend NYACTE/NYSATE conference and SUNY Deans and Directors meetings.

  • Coordinate with the Library certification program as needed.

  • Support the program coordinator on the course schedules for undergraduate teacher preparation programs and address/approve any challenges, changes, or edits in consultation with department chairs.

  • Work with the Dean, Assistant Dean, and Associate Dean to provide oversight for program changes, as needed, in program development.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean on student concerns, issues, and grievances.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in education or related field.

  • Relevant education and/or preparation in instructional delivery and management.

  • Exceptional writing, interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.

  • Ability to build and lead a team.

  • 3+ years of experience in K-12 Education preferably as a teacher, school leader, consultant, and/or specialist.

  • Experience building and sustaining productive relationships with community/school, and/or IHE partners

  • Enthusiasm and excitement for ongoing professional learning.

  • Ability to effectively handle multiple activities and situations simultaneously.

  • Experience in communities in which teaching and learning are the main purpose.

  • Experience managing people effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Education or related field.

  • NYS Permanent or Professional Teaching Certification.

  • Knowledge of, and experience in, the NYSED policy and function.

  • At least one year of experience with program accreditation.

  • Experience arranging, placing, and/or overseeing field experiences in schools for undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Experience serving as a clinical placement supervisor or campus-based educator to students engaged in field placement requirements.

  • Proficiency with business management systems desirable such as PeopleSoft, Slate (or similar system).

  • Successful track record of effective teaching, curriculum development, and education administration.

Professional Rank and Salary Grade: Staff Associate, SL4; $80,000-90,000.
