Job Title: Director of Special Education
Job Summary
The primary instructional leader in current special education trends as they relate and interface with general education students and curriculum. The Director will provide leadership in the utilization of Special Education Services in the development of the school's support of diverse learners. Must be able to plan professional development incorporating differentiation of instruction, curriculum modifications/accommodations, co-teaching, and instructional strategies.
Essential Duties
Assists the principal with the personnel process in recruiting, selecting, supervising, and evaluating special education teachers.
Supervises the referral of students to special education services.
Collaborates with the principal on all special education issues in the building.
Responsible for all due process mediation and hearings.
Facilitates IEP meetings and Manifestation Determination meetings.
Monitors the data management system and files of special education students in collaboration with the principal and teachers.
Collaborates and provide coordination with all outside services providers
Initial contact with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, parents, surrogates, advocates regarding complaints and compliance issues.
Projects enrollment, staff, and space needs of special education.
Responsibility of overseeing compliance of Federal and State Special Education Laws and legislation, i.e. IDEA.
Perform other duties as directed by the principal.
Qualifications
Advanced degree in education or related area required.
Knowledge of curriculum/state framework and standards.
Minimum of five (5) successful year's experience as an Administrator.
Successful teaching experience in special education or related field.
Outstanding leadership skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and State Special Education Legislation and Laws.
Maintains positive relationships with private and public agencies.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents, students, and school staff.
Provides staff with guidance regarding special education laws, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other appropriate statutes.
Strong orientation toward urban school systems, preferred.
