The Engineering Director leads and grows the Group's Software Engineering team delivering safety critical embedded software to Business Unit programs. Develop the strategy, processes, tools and capabilities to deliver this service from a common central team and leverage performance and efficiencies to provide Meggitt with a competitive advantage. There is also an emerging opportunity to grow the team to support the development of software applications to exploit in-service and manufacturing data-sets in support of Meggitt's data strategy.
Job Core Responsibilities
Manage the software team with responsibility for the schedule and cost of software deliverables to the SBU programs including scope definition and change management. This is likely to require both defining efficient processes and making pragmatic decisions to support program priorities.
Build and manage centralized capability and infrastructure to leverage performance and efficiencies in software development across the Group.
Establish and maintain excellent relations with SBU project engineering departments across the SBUs. There is the need to both ensure that the project teams remain satisfied with the support provided and that we continue to consolidate software engineering capability in the central software team. This requires being a trusted partner to the SBU engineering leadership and project teams.
Identify, screen & develop common software solutions across the Meggitt product groups
Manage appropriate levels of lean, strategic outsourcing in software development and works with the businesses to engage accordingly.
Ensure appropriate targets and KPIs are employed to measure and continuously improve the overall effectiveness of the software engineering function.
Improve the cost and capacity of our software solutions using standardized tools and reusable software elements.
Advance our capability in state-of-the-art safety critical software engineering via targeted applied research and technology initiatives.
Support the development of a corporate capability to develop, market and exploit of in-service and manufacturing data sets (i.e. "big data")
Act as functional leader of all software engineers in the Group, ensure best practice sharing across the group and lead improvement initiatives as required.
Education : Degree in engineering or equivalent work experience
Years Experience : 5 + years of experience leading the development of safety critical aerospace control or software systems. Minimum 5 years of experience working as an engineer delivering safety critical control or software programs in the aerospace, defence, transport or industrial sectors.
Strong customer service orientation and the program management ability to ensure program delivery to the right quality and cost.
Experience in the development of safety critical embedded software using SCADE and DOORS, application of DO-178 (Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification) and APR4754A (Guidelines for development Of Civil Aircraft and Systems) and completion of software certification audits with FAA, EASA and aerospace customers.
Demonstrable ability to deliver cost effective improvement to software development in the aerospace or high technology sectors using Lean / 6Sigma techniques.
Experience in deployment and use of software engineering tools and export-controlled technology in a multi-site, multi-national corporate environment.
Experience of exploiting large and disparate data sets in the aerospace or industrial sectors is desirable.

Experience in building, coaching and managing teams including delegating responsibility, training and evaluating performance.
