Job Duties

The Director of Social Work provides leadership and direction to the Social Work Department, ensuring that all clinical services are delivered according to best practices and in accordance with regulatory guidelines. This department head serves on the facility's Clinical Leadership and Senior Management Teams and works with multidisciplinary colleagues to develop and implement program activities, project, and policies that support the facility's strategic mission. The Director of Social Work Services is also the primary community liaison with the contacts from the private sector, local agencies, and community groups with the facility's catchment area. The incumbent of the position is expected to work with stakeholders from those groups to develop partnerships that will enhance the provisions of services to patients at PGH and the availability of community resources.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional social work practices.

  • Knowledge and skills in Social Work assessments, treatment planning, and performing a range of accepted Social Work practices.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness and management of social work treatment for mentally ill patients.

  • Knowledge of the aging and social work treatment with geropsychiatric patients.

  • Knowledge of the community systems involved in prescreening and aftercare of hospitalized older adults with psychiatric illnesses.

  • Knowledge of effective supervisory and management practice.

  • Ability to effectively supervise social work clinicians, administrative staff, and interns.

  • Ability to plan and administer a social work services program in conjunction with other hospital departments and community agencies.

  • The incumbent of this position must have the ability to serve as the hospital community liaison which requires comprehensive knowledge of program activities and their impact to the facility's strategic mission. The incumbent of this position must direct multiple programs; making appropriate contacts with private sector, county and city agencies, community groups with the overall goal that the delivery of programs and services assures that the patient's needs are being met.

  • The incumbent of this position must be able to understand and have a positive impact on the agency's programs, financial resources and/or public needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • LCSW required.

  • Masters degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work required.

  • Knowledge and skill in the design and day-to-day delivery of hospital-based social work services.

  • Experience providing direct clinical and administrative supervision of Social Work clinicians.

  • Experience in program development and evaluation of Social Work Services, preferably in geropsychiatric setting.

  • Experience with projects that require consultation to, and building cooperative relationships with, professional staff of other disciplines.

  • Experience in designed and implementing new programs or services in response to changing demands.

  • Experience in therapeutic assessment, counseling, family support and treatment, preferably with older adults with mental illness.

  • Experience in collaborating with the private sector, local agencies, and community groups to develop and implement programs to meet the needs of a specific population and facility.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

  • Experience developing and implementing performance improvement projects, using data to drive clinical decision making.

Additional Considerations

Previous experience in a Geriatric Hospital setting.
