Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in business or other relevant field, or a Bachelor's Degree and

seven years of work experience as a business owner/senior manager or business consultant is required.

  • Broad general knowledge of the principles and practices of business and excellent interpersonal and communication skills is expected.

  • The selected candidate also must have the ability to develop and manage multiple projects and a proven ability to work effectively with and within both the academic and business communities.

License/Certification Required Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree or Bachelors Degree with substantial applicable management experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The NC Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) is a business

development service of The University of North Carolina, reporting to the Office of the President, and serves as a leading public service and economic development arm of The University. The primary mission of the SBTDC is to support economic development in the state by providing business counseling, management education, and technology development services to help the business community successfully meet challenges, manage change and plan for the future. In carrying out its mission, the SBTDC cooperates with a broad range of programs and resources in the state, but its primary attention is focused on leveraging the management and technical assistance resources of The University's constituent institutions and other colleges and state-supported resources.

The Director of Small Business and Technology Development Center is an executive-level position that has day-to-day management responsibility for the SBTDC's Appalachian Foothills Regional Service Center serving a 14-county region in Western North Carolina. This includes responsibility for the management of 2 offices (Boone, and Hickory). The Regional Director directs and manages the delivery of business counseling, management training, research and technical assistance services to small to mid-sized business owners, would-be entrepreneurs and to individuals and firms developing new product technologies or markets. This position is relatively autonomous and manages both staff and budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the SBTDC Director include:

  • Client Counseling & Technical Assistance (15-30% of work time) - The Regional Director is responsible for managing the counseling activities of the Regional Service Center as outlined in the SBTDC Strategic Plan. Some direct counseling by the Regional Director is expected but this should not exceed established limits so as not to interfere with other management responsibilities.

    Counseling responsibility includes direct client contact in one-on-one meetings and through telephone and written communications. It also includes the very substantial time that must be committed to adequately research, prepare materials, and recommend courses of action to clients who are counseled. Quality of service is important.

  • RSC Management /Administration (30-35% of work time) - The Regional Director is responsible for developing an Annual Work Plan, managing the activities of the Regional Center, and providing supervision and direction for all professional and staff personnel. In addition, the Director provides oversight and management of the center's budget.

    The Regional Director is responsible for keeping confidential client records, maintaining the SBTDC CRM System and producing quarterly reports in a timely manner. He is also expected to attend management meetings when scheduled and participate in SBTDC statewide committee assignments and special projects as requested.

  • Marketing and Outreach (25-35% of work time) - The Regional Director will have lead responsibilities for establishing and maintaining a strong SBTDC presence throughout the multi-county area served by that center. This includes representing the SBTDC at meetings and conferences, making contacts with potential sources of referrals and with prospective groups of clients, and developing appropriate programs. The Director is also charged with developing significant connectively and relevance to the RSC's host institution(s) and leveraging its resources for the benefit of the business community.

  • Training (10-15% of work time) - The Regional Center Director is responsible for the design and delivery of appropriate training and Management Education Services programs within the region that will meet the training deliverables for the center as provided in the RSC's annual work plan.

  • Performance Evaluations & Professional Development (5% of work time) - The Regional Director is responsible for ensuring that performance evaluations are completed in a timely manner as required by The University. The Director will also develop an annual performance plan and professional development plan for each employee based at the Regional Service Center.
