Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Equity and Accessibility, the Director of Prevention Education is responsible for the leadership, oversight, and coordination of sexual and gender-based violence prevention education and outreach programming for the campus community. Through the Sexual Violence Prevention Initiative, Virginia Tech seeks to advance a campus culture free from sexual and gender-based violence in which all members of our community share responsibility and accountability for sustaining this campus culture. The position will serve as the inaugural director of the newly created department for sexual violence prevention education and will lead university-wide sexual and gender-based violence prevention initiatives for the VT community. In this capacity, the Director coordinates a university-wide sexual violence prevention council, an undergraduate and graduate advisory council, and supervises a team of sexual violence prevention professionals and a team of paid peer-leaders to support prevention efforts. The director plays an instrumental role in developing and executing a university-wide strategic plan to support a comprehensive, coordinated sexual and gender-based violence prevention program. In the spirit of advancing a culture of learning, empowerment, and accountability, the Director will ensure the work is relationally driven, data-informed, grounded in evidence-based best practices, inclusively collaborative, and supported by clear, consistent communication. Working across organizational units and senior management areas, the Director will ensure sexual and gender-based violence prevention programs align with Virginia Tech's mission and values, utilize trends learned from the other units whose work supports the university's response to sexual violence, address legal compliance, and elevate the University's strategic priority to become a global land-grant who is seen as a thought leader in the field of sexual and gender-based violence prevention.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate the Sexual Violence Prevention Initiative serving as convener of the Sexual Violence Prevention Council comprised of campus partners critical to prevention work and leading two advisory groups for students (undergraduate and graduate, respectively)

• Advance a comprehensive sexual and gender-based violence prevention strategic plan that is evidence based and consistent with best practices in sexual and gender-based violence prevention education

• Lead the development of an operational plan for the newly created department that aligns sexual and gender-based violence prevention efforts into a coordinated and comprehensive university-wide sexual and gender-based violence prevention strategy

• Lead efforts to continuously seek feedback from the campus community to ensure development and implementation of prevention programs meet the needs of the campus community at all VT campus locations

• Develop metrics and measures to assess the effectiveness of sexual and gender-based violence prevention programs with a focus on continuous program improvement

• Develop sexual and gender-based violence prevention education and outreach programs; ensure programs include learning objectives and student learning outcomes; assess programs to ensure outcomes and objectives are achieved

• Provide presentations to the campus, community partners, and on sexual and gender-based violence prevention education and SVPI initiatives

• Work collaboratively with the Title IX Coordinator to ensure the development and delivery of sexual and gender-based violence prevention education program aligns with Title IX compliance expectations and addresses identified trends in sexual and gender-based violence reports and complaints

• Work collaboratively with campus partners including Student Conduct, Hokie Wellness, Human Resources, Faculty Affairs, Dean of Students, Women's Center, Fraternity and Sorority Life, New Student Programs, Athletics, Corps of Cadets and others who are key partners for advancing sexual and gender-based violence prevention education

• Lead the development of a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that includes periodic reports, publications, and outreach materials to publicize sexual and gender-based violence prevention program

• Stay up to date on sexual and gender-based violence prevention education research, best practices, and trends in higher education to ensure best in class prevention education programs

• Develop departmental budget; continually evaluate resource and programmatic needs

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in public health, counseling, gender studies, sociology, psychology, college student development, or a related field.

• Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and assessing sexual and gender-based violence prevention programs and campaigns.

• Experience working with organizations that focus on sexual and gender-based violence prevention, sexual assault, domestic violence and/or stalking.

• Working knowledge of relevant federal laws such as Title IX, the Clery Act, and the Violence Against Women Act.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build consensus.

• Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive information and act with discretion and neutrality. Demonstrated skill in developing trauma-informed programs and services.

• Proficiency with Microsoft office programs and case management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated understanding of intersectionality, diversity, equity, and social justice and its impacts on sexual and gender-based violence.

• Experience developing and delivering sexual and gender-based violence prevention education programs in a college or university setting.

• Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in high pressure or crisis situations.

• Experience developing and managing budgets.

• Experience leading and supervising a team of sexual and gender-based violence prevention professionals.

• Experience working across a large, complex enterprise.

Commensurate with experience with a salary range of $130,000-$140,000 per year
