Duties
The Director of Security oversees, administers and maintains operations to assure the safety of people, property, and assets in the school district. The Director recruits, trains, evaluates, and schedules security personnel. The Director creates and evaluates crisis preparedness plans and acts as a liaison between the district and outside entities.
Hires, supervises, and evaluates security staff
Maintains a high functioning building security staff by coaching, counseling, evaluating, and if needed, disciplining security officers.
Conducts interviews and makes recommendations for new hires.
Completes building security operations requirements by scheduling and assigning security guards to posts and routes, and inspecting work results
Develop and provide professional development opportunities for security officers and building personnel - work with district administrators to provide professional development opportunities for our teachers and staff members
Ensures Security Officers are in compliance with district policy/procedures, and state law related to firearms.
Develop, maintain, and implement an Emergency Operations Plan that is based on the foundation of Incident Command protocols. This should include a building level Operations Team as well as being a member of the Threat Assessment Team.
Member of District Emergency Management Team
Manage and maintain the District's Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program.
Lead and manage ALICE training component as well as any critical incident and emergency management training.
Act as a liaison to community public safety, county emergency management, and the Regional Office of Education (ROE) regarding school safety.
Maintain membership and remain active as a member of the School Safety Network for the DuPage County ROE.
Responsible overall administration of the Avigilon security camera and door access system. This includes managing and maintaining overall operational readiness of these systems.
Continue to monitor trends and studies related to school safety and security, making recommendations when appropriate to bring innovative improvements to District efforts.
Develop, manage, and monitor the annual security budget.
Input into capital budget and capital plan regarding overall security.
Input into the strategic plan.
Provides supervision, Security for and policing of extracurricular or evening functions.
Ensures regular building surveillance; checks exterior of building, grounds and parking areas to prevent vandalism, loitering and illegal activity.
Implements procedures for issuing parking tickets as needed, bringing problem areas to the attention of appropriate administrator(s).
Responsible for managing the crossing guard service provider.
Assists with all state statute required drills and protocols as required.
Develop and implement a plan to monitor student activity including entry, exit, movement within the building, and areas where students gather (i.e. cafeteria, study halls).
Assist with the management of large school events and athletic contests (before-during and after school hours) in collaboration with the Athletic Director, Director of Deans and/or Assistant Principal.
Work with building level administrators to further develop event management, off-site evacuation, and security plans in addition to chain of command procedures in the event of an emergency.
Cooperates with public safety in events such as auto accidents, personal injury, or other appropriate situations, such as school emergencies
Maintain strong working relationship with SROs, District 86 staff members, and the community
Assist the Dean's Office, the SRO, and Law Enforcement with student investigations when appropriate and within legal guidelines.
Assists with investigations regarding faculty reports of thefts, vandalism or any other criminal or harmful act, i.e., false fire or disaster alarms, etc.
Assist the school nurse in maintaining the names of trained personnel who have received a statement of certification pursuant to State law for administering undesignated opioid antagonists (per Board policy 7:270).
Qualifications
Minimum of ten (10) years experience in law enforcement, military, public safety, or security.
Possess a valid driver's license
Bachelor's degree preferred
Minimum three (3) years supervisory experience required.
Knowledge of federal and state law as well as village ordinances
Working skill in observing situations in an analytical, objective manner
High standards of integrity, honesty and accuracy
Strong people and process management skills
Must possess a valid license to carry a firearm in a school
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to communicate in English (speak/read/write)
Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive information
Knowledge in working with technical communications systems, programs and equipment during daily operations and emergency circumstances.
Presents a professional image and interacts professionally with faculty, staff, students and community
