JOB PURPOSE

To serve and protect all persons and property within the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Midwestern) community by upholding the mission to serve through highly trained, vigilant, and professional practices. The Chief of Security ensures a safe and secure environment conducive to education and community life. This role combines strategic leadership with operational excellence in all aspects of campus safety and law enforcement liaison.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Community Policing & Engagement

  • Implement and lead standard community policing practices to foster a secure, inclusive campus atmosphere.

  • Engage proactively with the campus community to educate, inform, and involve them in safety initiatives.

  • Ensure Midwestern's readiness to protect life and property through comprehensive emergency preparedness, while upholding our values of care and community.

Departmental Management

  • Responsible for the financial management for the Campus Security department, including budget management and capital planning.

  • Manage staff and patrol schedules to maintain 24/7 security presence.

  • Develop and monitor service benchmarks and KPIs.

Hiring, Training & Professional Development

  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop security officers. This includes establishing performance expectations and monitoring officer performance, as well as coaching and mentoring to improve performance. If necessary, this also includes taking necessary disciplinary action (up to and including termination, in accordance with extant Human Resources policies) to address performance deficiencies.

  • Lead a comprehensive training program for security officers, including (but not limited to): campus policies and procedures, KCPD Private Officers Licensing Standards, combat profiling, verbal judo, OC spray, power handcuffing, ground defense, defensive tactics, handgun retention, firearm qualification, gun range time, and taser training.

Technology Management

  • Oversee the operation and integration of advanced security technologies, including camera systems, access control systems, a fleet of vehicles, ID cards, and physical key cores and locks.

  • Evaluate technology effectiveness based on utility and strategic impact and make recommendations to senior management for improvements.

Policy Development & Compliance

  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of all laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to Campus Security, including the Clery Act and Title IX, and ensure full compliance and accurate reporting.

  • Spearhead security policy development.

  • Ensure the department remains at the forefront of best practices for campus security.

Liaison & Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary security contact for Midwestern, providing timely and thorough responses to inquiries from local law enforcement agencies.

  • Collaborating closely with the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD), Clay County Sheriff's Office, and other first responders.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Include, but not limited to:

  • Christian with demonstrated Christlikeness and high integrity, who is actively pursuing a relationship with God in the context of a local church.

  • A minimum of five (5) years in patrol and community policing, with a certified law enforcement, military police, or similar background.

  • Must hold a KCPD Private Officer License or be able to obtain a license within one month of employment with Midwestern.

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or equivalent law enforcement experience is preferred.

  • Experience in a leadership role within a security or law enforcement agency is preferred.

  • Advanced training in emergency management, public safety, or related fields is highly desirable.

  • Able to take the initiative to lead Campus Security and to complete the duties of the position without the need for direct supervision.

  • Exceptional leadership and teaching abilities, capable of developing entry-level security candidates into law enforcement career-ready professionals.

  • Strong personnel management skills.

  • Experience in establishing and managing organizational security policies.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

  • Must be able to work independently, as well as a part of a team.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to speak Spanish or Korean is valued.

  • Must possess a positive attitude and a desire and willingness to learn.

  • Must possess a clean criminal history, with no pending court actions, and be able to pass background screening, including driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typically maintain Midwestern business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM).

  • Some work outside Midwestern business hours will be necessary, including evening and weekend hours

  • Availability on an "on-call" basis for emergencies is a crucial expectation for this role.

  • Both office and outdoor environments.

  • Provided a Midwestern Security vehicle for use during work hours.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must regularly stand or walk for extended periods of time.

  • May be required to sit or stand for periods of time at a desk or computer station.

  • Able to lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds.

  • Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting may be required.
