Summary of Job Duties:

This position is a tenure-track, twelve-month faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian / Assistant Professor or Associate Librarian / Associate Professor.

The University of Arkansas Libraries invite nominations and applications for the position of Director of Resource Sharing and Interlibrary Loan. The Libraries seek candidates dedicated to active leadership with demonstrated experience with management and policy creation.

The director supports a department of staff and student employees, defining departmental goals for this key library service, informed by patron needs, changes in software, technologies, and trends in the field. The director is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department. This unit collaborates with other libraries to obtain access to library resources requested by University of Arkansas students, faculty, and staff that are not owned by our University Libraries.

The unit reciprocates by providing similar services to other libraries. The unit also delivers scans of University Libraries' articles and chapters requested by our students, faculty, and staff. In addition to providing coordination of the unit's services and operations, the person in this position oversees processing of incoming borrowing and lending requests.

The Libraries seek candidates who are receptive to and foster new ideas and who have demonstrated collaboration and open communication skills. Additional key attributes are the ability to establish and promote successful partnerships with other university departments, provide excellent services, and to adapt or develop programs and services that support positive change within the institution.

Along with performance, the responsibilities of this position include research and creative work, and service in keeping with the faculty requirements of the University of Arkansas. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Learning.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, management, and advocacy for the department to advance the department in alignment with the Libraires' vision, mission, and goals.

  • Oversee a department of 5 full-time staff. Directly supervise, provide guidance, and mentor staff members regarding program development, coordination of projects, and optimization of operational effectiveness.

    Select and coordinate training for staff, and/or provide orientation of new staff. Support professional development opportunities for staff. Assist with hiring, training, and supervision of the unit's student employees, as needed. Provide staff/student backup as needed to ensure continuity of service.

  • Review, document, analyze, evaluate activities, workflow, and policies to determine priorities and evaluate the unit's operational effectiveness. Disseminate, interpret, and negotiate policies, procedures, and goals in verbal and written form to ensure that the unit's operations are clearly understood and documented. Prepare fiscal, statistical and activity reports as needed for consortia, and the Libraries' administration.

  • Develop new protocols as needed for services and keep abreast of trends and new technology in resource sharing to determine relevant changes for the unit.

  • Ensure strong collaboration and cooperation with User Services, and Research and Instruction, Special Collections, and Collections and Open Initiatives.

  • Represent Resource Sharing and Interlibrary Loan on the Libraries' Management Council.

  • Participate in university director/department head functions and meetings.

  • Participate in state, regional, or national opportunities to study, promote and/or improve services. Serve as the Libraries' resource-sharing representative to state, regional and national organizations.

  • Serve actively on library and university committees and teams, pursue involvement in professional organizations or associations, and develop professionally through research, publishing, presentations, or grant-writing.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent institution

  • Previous supervisory/management experience

  • Demonstrated experience providing service in a resource sharing/interlibrary loan environment

  • Demonstrated knowledge with variety of library service and content management systems and software utilized in academic libraries

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an academic library

  • Evidence of strong customer service orientation

  • Familiarity with ILLiad, RAPIDILL, or ALMA LSP

  • Demonstrated commitment to student and faculty success

  • Strong desire and demonstrated ability to remain current on trends and learn new skills, tools, and technologies
