Job Description:

The Director of Residence Life is the senior housing officer responsible for a comprehensive residence life program with 1,500 beds located in traditional residence halls and over 100 student rental properties. The director must be a visionary, detail-oriented and highly collaborative leader; They must possess a track record of successfully managing people and teams, a desire to engage faculty and staff in the residential experience, a strong understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusion, and understanding of legal issues and risk management. The director of reports directly to the Assistant Vice President of Student Development & Dean of Student Success.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

1.Provide oversight for developing, implementing and assessing residence life programs to enhance the quality of students' residential experience.

2.Participate in and make recommendations for developing and implementing University-approved student housing policies and procedures; provide oversight for monitoring students' compliance with University regulations in all University housing (residence halls and student rental properties).

3.Provide direct supervision for five residence life staff members, and indirect supervision of forty-four student staff.

4.Provide a program that creates inclusive living-learning communities that foster students' academic success and personal growth; assist students in their adjustment, development and integration to campus life. Make referrals and recommendations as appropriate.

5.Oversee the processes for selecting, training, and supervising residence life staff.

6.Prepare annual budgets and provide oversight of departmental, programming, and residential building expenses.

7.Develop occupancy projection trends and retention strategies.

8.Develop comprehensive, on-going assessments of the residential experience.

9.Exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding student problems, parental concerns, faculty concerns, and staff problems regarding the student housing experience.



  1. Provide oversight for planning and implementing student housing selection processes.

  2. Review and make decisions regarding releases for commuter students, and students requesting release from student living options.

  3. Provide oversight for preparing and maintaining student housing publications, forms and reports necessary to the student housing program.

  4. Provide oversight for the management of housing facilities. Make recommendations for renovation and repairs, space allocation, and equipment acquisition in residence halls and other student housing.

  5. Serve as liaison with Facilities, Business Office, Admission, Police Division, Registrar's Office, Building Services, and Information Technology Services and with offices in which Area Coordinators will complete collateral assignments.

  6. Oversee and serve in the Student Development on-call rotation assisting with emergencies and critical incidents. (Requires that the director live within 30 minutes of campus. Flexibility to discuss options for those living outside the 30 minute requirement).

  7. Serve as a member of the Student Care Team and collaborate with the conduct office, counseling center, health center, center for student success, and other partners to identify students of concern and respond appropriately.

  8. Participate in appropriate staff development opportunities; serve on campus, community, and professional association committees; appropriately keep supervisor abreast of matters sensitive in nature.

  9. Perform other duties related and incidental to the work described herein.


Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, crisis response, and ad-hoc committees etc.

Requirements:

Requirements include:

  • A master's degree in higher education/student affairs or related field is required.

  • Five to seven years' experience working in residence life required.

  • Experience working with housing assignment software required.

  • Excellent customer service, time management, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work with a variety of constituents, solve problems quickly and professionally, anticipate needs, and communicate proactively.

  • Candidates should be committed to student success and have a commitment to and understanding of a liberal arts education and diversity at a Lutheran affiliated college.

  • Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint with the ability and desire to learn additional software applications as necessary.

  • Reside within 30 minutes of campus. Flexibility to discuss options for those living outside the 30 minute proximity.

  • Night and weekend work will be required depending on campus events and needs.

  • Frequently move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds (with assistance) for various event and activity needs.

  • Frequently utilizes computer for extended periods (up to 50% of the work day).
