The University of Virginia's College at Wise invites applications for a Director of Residence Life (DRL). This position is a 12-month live-on position that reports to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and is a member of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team. Successful candidates will be individuals who are energetic, dedicated, team-oriented, progressive, and student-centered .

The DRL will have oversight of the Residence Life program, including providing leadership to a diverse on-campus population of 600 plus students in seven residence halls. The DRL will supervise three Assistant Director of Residence Life staff members and approximately 25 resident assistants (RAs).

Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate staff recruitment, selection, and staff development, including summer and winter RA training and assessment;

  • Create and maintain programming policies and procedures to enhance student satisfaction, promote academic success, and contribute to student retention;

  • Develop and sustain strong and effective collaborative partnerships and relationships with key constituencies across campus;

  • Assist with facilities management and planning;

  • Coordinate and participate in on-call duty responsibilities;

  • Understanding of operations of housing assignment and student information system, StarRez/Jenzabar, including coordinating housing contracting and room selection;

  • Provide oversight of Residence Hall Opening & Closing procedures and logistics, including but not limited to early arrivals and the extended stay approval process;

  • Serve as the budget officer overseeing all expenditures of the Student Residence Hall, Utilities, and Reserve accounts;

  • Provide oversight and strategic direction to the Living & Learning Community Program on campus with collaboration from Academic Affairs;

  • Assist with the conferences and events program during the summer;

  • Serve as a member on various College committees;

  • Other duties as assigned as a member of the Division of Student Affairs.

In addition, the DRL will assist with creating a healthy and safe residential environment, including supporting programming and education initiatives related to the College's diversity education initiatives, working with student conduct, supporting Clery Act and Title IX compliance, and being aware of and assisting with implementation of other state and/or federal requirements.

A Master's Degree is required. Experience working with StarRez/Jenzabar housing software or other housing-related software is preferred.

Listed in Workday as a Student Affairs Program Specialist, they will have front-line responsibility for executing a particular function within the Division of Student Affairs. They typically supervise student staff, engage in student advising and problem-solving, and support specific populations of students with program planning and implementation (e.g. outreach, and education). Student Affairs Program Specialists generally exercise some discretion in stewarding financial resources to advance the needs of their student populations or communities.
