We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Research & Development (R&D) that will serve as the primary leader for research and development within the IT Division of Enterprise. This is a new position that will help create and support the company's strategic vision for a new construct that will drive IT innovation at the speed of a startup and scale of an enterprise. The R&D leader will be expected to communicate the purpose, value proposition and process methodology of this new team at an executive level.
The Director of R&D will champion the strategy and have a heavy focus on generating enthusiasm for the R&D practice across the business and IT. This role will be primarily responsible for the facilitation of innovative capabilities from conception to pilot with a focus on driving value fast. The Director of R&D will work closely with the CIO and other key leaders from across the organization to align R&D activities with strategic imperatives and will be responsible for building awareness around a brand that fosters a culture of ongoing innovation, inclusivity, and transparency. Providing strategic leadership and influence at the executive level will be necessary to ideate around the technical capability and associated business use cases that are really going to make a difference to existing business lines and new business.
Other leadership responsibilities will include resource planning and development for a core team of 4 employees; including interviewing, hiring, training, managing performance, rewarding, and career planning. Responsibilities for this team include the maintenance of virtual environments, physical space, oversight for vendor management, capacity planning, knowledge base growth and development efforts. This team will facilitate the ongoing collection, prioritization, planning, development, and delivery of capabilities following the R&D team process framework. As projects arise, the Director of R&D will also be responsible for overseeing temporary project teams.
This position reports directly to Mike Nolfo, Chief Information Officer of Enterprise Holdings, and is located at our world headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. The Director of R&D will be a highly visible, front-facing role. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who is adept at building a new practice, is comfortable with rapid ideation and development, and can demonstrate success in an ambiguous environment.
Additional responsibilities will include:
Communicate the R&D process, progress and outcomes at executive strategy meetings
Provide thought leadership in emerging technologies and platforms, IT and innovation
Apply capabilities/emerging technologies using relevant industry knowledge
Build and lead integrated and high performing development teams that support a diverse environment
Foster nimble development by implementing agile methodologies and removing blockers for dev teams
Establish cross-functional relationships which allow for cohesive strategy development and alignment with IT and business initiatives
Build strong relationships between global IT teams
Effectively manage key vendor relationships
Drive innovation with an understanding enterprise-level architecture standards and principles
Analyze, influence, and translate project requirements into concepts and strategies that align with our overall technology and business vision
Conduct analysis to determine best path for solving business problems/opportunities that may include process improvement, systems enhancement, and/or user training

10+ years of consulting or relevant experience required (strategy or innovation experience preferred)
Experience in building and leading integrated and high performing development teams
Must exhibit a leadership style that exhibits strategic thinking, collaboration, direct communication and results orientation
Proven success in people management
Demonstrates executive-level written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal and collaborative skills
Superb relationship management skills, specifically around leading change with the ability to create a non-adversarial atmosphere and be viewed as a partner
Proven track record to innovate with speed and agility
Must have the ability to position oneself effectively as a thought leader in the areas of IT Strategy and R&D by communicating related concepts with poise
Proven ability to manage in a complex operating environment, including multiple vendors and agile teams Significant and extensive leadership, management and team building of IT professionals and leaders

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, or related field preferred
