Initial core responsibilities of the Director of Radiochemistry Research will to focus on laboratory research needs with expectation of leading the future development of an independent and well-funded research program in the area of radiopharmaceutical chemistry. Areas of expertise include handling, synthesis, quality control/quality assurance of radioisotopes/radiopharmaceuticals, US pharmaceutical regulations, set up and maintenance of quality systems, new synthetic and radiosynthetic methodologies, GMP production, automation and demonstrated experience in the radiosynthesis of new radiopharmaceutical agents is an added advantage. The candidate will serve as the Authorized User for the Radiopharmacy Laboratory of the Research Imaging Core which will consist of commonly used as well as development of novel PET radiotracers.

Specific areas of expertise with regards to disease focus are flexible and could include neurological, oncology, cardiology, or other clinical applications. Other responsibilities include close interaction with basic scientists and clinical researchers in planning, conducting, and evaluating data.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

  • Candidates must have a PhD degree in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Pharmacy, or Related Field, with postgraduate or postdoctoral training and research experience.

  • Applicants are expected to have proficiency in handling, synthesis, and quality control/quality assurance of radioisotopes/radiopharmaceuticals. Experience in developing, maintaining and improving site QA systems and procedures is a must.

    Experience in the 18F radiolabeling of small molecules is a must. In addition, the candidate must have experience in the radiolabeling of peptides, affibodies, and other biologics.

  • Competency in analytical techniques, development/validation of analytical methods in accordance with ICH guidelines. The use, maintenance and troubleshooting of HPLC, GC and TLC systems is required.

  • Advanced knowledge of radiopharmacy production for use in human subjects. This includes experience in product quality, patient safety, and familiarity with GXP regulations (GLP and GMP).

  • Prior background and experience in pharmaceutical production in both academia and industry preferred.

  • Experience with the submission and review of NIH funded grants is preferred.

    Experience producing radiopharmaceuticals for phase II and III clinical trials.
  • The candidate must have published radiopharmaceutical methods/techniques in peer reviewed journals and/or have patent applications. Laboratory Manager and/or Transfer Project Management experience preferred.

    Experience in protocol submission and processes with regards to IND and RDRC committees is a must.

    Experience in submission of Drug Master File documentation and/or Chemistry Manufacture and Controls for FDA IND applications is a must.
