The Progressive Surgery Unit Director is responsible for the administration and supervision of a nursing unit, 24 hours a day. She/he evaluates patient acuity to provide the best nursing care possible with the resources available.

She/he is responsible for all nursing activities related directly or indirectly to pre and post-surgery patient care. The unit director gives direct nursing care to patients as needed. Reports to the Vice President of Patient Care and is classified as a management position.



Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required


BSN preferred.


Minimum of five years of experience in a charge nurse capacity in area of specialty with proven leadership abilities.

Additional Skills/Abilities:

Licensed and currently registered as an R.N. by the Alabama Board of Nursing; capable of working under the following conditions: assigned primarily to dayshift, however, works other shifts based on need; visits all shifts on regular basis; capable of handling emergency or crisis situations; capable of withstanding mental stress; capable of working long hours as required.

Responsibilities include knowledge of all aspects of MRI equipment, proper patient positioning, digital image management for interpretations, implementation of patient charges, and assists physician as required. Responsibilities Responsibilities Consults with the Director and Dietician regarding food service and therapeutic diets. Coordinates daily operation of the food service kitchen using initiative and judgment in assigning jobs and ensuring that job expectations are met. Coordinates all functions of kitchen requirements to include loading, delivery, pick-up, and cleaning of food. Plans, coordinates, and delivers to special functions according to requests. Trains, supervises, disciplines, and evaluates patient service employees. Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department. Maintains department records, reports, and files as required. Directs maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies, and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, of patients and staff in accordance with hospital policies and procedures and departmental safety standards. Qualifications Qualifications Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Radiologic Technology and possess a current ARRT registry or be registry eligible. Completion of certified MRI program preferred. MRI registry preferred. Registry should be acquired within one year of employment Experience: Less than one year of work experience. At least three months preferred. Thorough knowledge of Radiologic and MRI, practice and procedure, physiology and human anatomy. Prefer training in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Additional Skills/Abilities: 1) Completes hospital orientation and training. 2) Ability to manage sometime stressful work environment. 3) Flexible to schedule; will work additional hours/shifts in situations of high census, adverse weather conditions and other employee absences or vacancies as requested. Performs all other related duties as assigned or requested. 4) Ability to answer phone and relay messages. 5) Excellent verbal and written skills to facilitate communication with medical and technical personnel. 6) Ability to deal efficiently and continuously with all hospital personnel. 7) Ability to work in a team environment and take criticism. 8) Ability to operate computer terminal.
