The School of Social Work is proud of its 42 year history educating MSW and BSW social workers throughout Southeastern New England. The MSW and BSW programs currently serve 350 students. The school and its faculty are committed to a teaching and learning process which

located on a beautiful 180-acre suburban campus in the vibrant city of Providence, and has satellite locations at the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center in Providence's Innovation District and the Rhode Island College Workforce Development Hub in Central Falls, RI. The Director of Practicum Education will provide leadership and oversight with all practicum experiences, practicum policies and practicum education accreditation standards associated with programs in the School of Social Work. The individual will direct and coordinate practicum placement activities related to the educational objectives of both the BSW and MSW programs. The Director of Practicum Education must be committed to and understand the generalist perspective.

Primary Purpose

Provide leadership and oversight with all practicum experiences, practicum policies and practicum education accreditation standards associated with programs in the School of Social Work. Direct and coordinate practicum placement activities related to the educational objectives of both the BSW and MSW programs. The Director of Practicum Education must be committed to and understand the generalist perspective.

Essential Duties

  • Provide leadership in the establishment, maintenance and improvement of practicum experiences and policies in Social Work.

  • Develop practicum experiences that are consistent with generalist practices at the BSW level. The director of practicum education will spend 50% of his/her hours administering the BSW program activities.

  • Develop practicum experiences that reflect the generalist level in the first year of the MSW.

  • Develop practicum experiences that are consistent with the advanced curriculum of the MSW program which reflect the generalist perspective in the advanced curriculum including the clinical track, and macro practice track. The director of practicum education will spend 50% of his/her hours administering the MSW program activities.

  • Supervise one full or part -time practicum coordinator and one full-time administrative assistant.

  • Participate in SSW leadership, SSW, MSW and BSW meetings.

  • Coordinate and administer all Social Work practicum experiences including:

  • Selection of practicum supervisors

  • Assessment of students for practicum readiness

  • Assignment of students to practicum placements

  • Supervision of students when needed

  • Development and implementation of orientation and professional development programs for agency supervisors each year

  • Create and maintain school-agency affiliations agreements

  • Develop and oversee policies that are consistent with CSWE requirements for student internships where employment is used as an internship

  • Establish a practicum calendar for faculty, students and practicum instructors.

  • Educate and work with practicum placements to act in accordance with the School's anti-racist policies.

  • Review, update and disseminate all practicum related policies and manuals annually.

  • Develop and maintain the practicum education portion of the School's website.

  • Manage the placement tracking software & be a liaison with the third-party vendor.

  • Develop innovative experimental agency-based practicum units.

  • Engage with the regional New England Field Education Directors consortium and the North American Network of Field Education Directors.

  • Participate in self-study and reaccreditation activities for CSWE.

  • Provide information regarding the programs of the School to students and community agencies.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Good understanding of both generalist and advanced practice.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Good negotiation and interpersonal skills.

  • Good computer skills.

Required Qualifications

Education: MSW from a CSWE-accredited program.

Experience: A minimum of five years post-MSW practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching and administrative experience.

  • Bilingual
