Job Summary:

Director of PhD Program Administration is responsible for leadership of McCormick TGS (The Graduate School) Doctoral Programs. Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Research and Doctoral Education, the position leads cohesive management of existing and future programs.

The Director oversees PhD program administration including recruitment, enrollment, fellowship management, academic standards, graduate student labor union matters, student learning environment and experience for more than 1,000 PhD students in McCormick. Serves as the school advisor for the McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC). Represents McCormick with various Northwestern and external entities. Provides other related analysis and support of the Office of Research and Graduate Affairs and those initiatives identified as priorities by the Dean and Senior Associate Dean.

Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Collaborates with McCormick departments in management of PhD programs. Develop and maintain productive working relationship with The Graduate School.

    Serves as the advisor of the McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC) overseeing related activities throughout the year. Ensures McCormick achieves university/school objectives for diversity and student inclusion.

Student Experience

  • Ensures optimal student experience throughout lifecycle from recruitment through graduation. Oversees recruitment, admissions, and enrollment processes.

    Manages events and speaker series, etc. Manages the academic integrity process for TGS PhD Programs.

Graduate Student Union

  • Serves as the primary point of contact to McCormick Departments, TGS, Office of General Counsel and Human Resources related to the Graduate Student Union matters. Serves on relevant committees; disseminate information and ensure adherence to policies of the collective bargaining agreement. Support the McCormick grievance process as they are escalated from units and Departments.

Operations and Budget Planning

  • Engages regularly with graduate program staff in Departments to build community, share best practices and relevant policies. Collaborates with McCormick Office of Administration, Finance and Planning on annual budget development and forecast. With the Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Education, manages McCormick policy development for postdoctoral fellows.

Metrics and Reporting

  • Monitors all aspects of student recruitment through enrollment. Prepares enrollment forecasts for NU Central.

    Reconciles actual enrollment to tuition sharing transfers from the NU Budget Office. Prepares annual distribution data for tuition sharing with the departments.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $110,260 - $150,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • BS in engineering, the sciences, or related field
  • 8+years of academic experience in the development and management of graduate programs, preferably in engineering or related fields. Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
