About the Unit

The Lindau Laboratory at the University of Chicago is an interdisciplinary, fast-paced laboratory performing human-level observational, interventional (clinical trials), health services, geospatial and computational/simulation research motivated by a fundamental concern for the principle of justice or fairness in health and health care. The lab is actively growing, presently with 3 concurrent NIH-funded studies (two are new 5 year, R01-funded clinical trials) and funding from AHRQ and other sources. The Lab, funded predominantly and continuously by agencies of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services along with private philanthropy for more than 15 years, currently employs about 15 full and part-time researchers across disciplines including epidemiology, gerontology, anthropology, public health, and health care communications. The lab routinely and widely collaborates across disciplines, University of Chicago units, and with investigators at other institutions including experts in the fields of computer science, social services administration, psychology, geriatrics, oncology public health and other medical and social science fields. In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Lindau is a practicing gynecologist with specialized expertise in prevalence, prevention and treatment of sexual disorders in women. The work of the lab focuses in two main areas: 1) urban health and population health improvement, with a particular concern for women and older adults living in high-poverty communities and 2) preservation and treatment of female sexual function in the context of aging and cancer and other common diseases. The two main programs of research include the South Side Health and Vitality Studies (CommunityRx, MAPSCorps, Feed1st) and the Program in Integrative Sexual Medicine (PRISM) (Bionic Breast Project, WomanLab, Scientific Network on Female Sexual Health and Cancer). SSHVS is a >10 year collaborative effort led by the Lindau Lab including university researchers and community members that aims to understand how community assets and information and communication technologies can be used to improve health and vitality. The Lab has spun out two companies: NowPow, LLC and MAPSCorps, 501c3, both based in Hyde Park, that are active collaborators with the Lab's research program.

Responsibilities

The job manages a team of professional staff responsible for scientific research projects and research facilities. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates. Manages the production of articles, reports, and manuscripts, and presents research findings at meetings and/ or conferences.

  1. Manages research professionals and support staff involved with planning, monitoring, and compliance aspects of research projects. Advises other researchers on long-range plans for research projects., 2) Develops goals and operating procedures, practices, and guidelines for research activity based on department strategy., 3) Manages the laboratory facilities, including the purchase of new equipment and the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment., 4) Reviews research of others, and may conduct own research, in area of expertise. Edits and approves articles, reports and manuscripts. Presents research findings at meetings and/or conference. Manages the research of processes in clinical or non-clinical settings. Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Unit-specific Responsibilities

  1. Research Operations: Executes Lindau Lab's grant operations plans and plays key role in developing and executing overall plan to meet externally funded deliverables. In the proposal development, oversees and coordinates the development of all contracts, including those with vendors, consultants and subcontracts with other institutions.
  2. Perform significant leadership and creative role in the implementation of research studies.
  3. Provide leadership in the implementation of community-engaged research strategies.
  4. Build and maintain partnerships across the University and with external collaborators, including community leaders and residents.
  5. Independently present scientific and programmatic findings in public forums
  6. Independently enable translation of novel research methods and interventions in diverse settings
  7. Financial and Business Strategy Development and Implementation (50%): Develops and executes Lindau Lab's operational plan and plays key role in developing and executing organization's overall strategic plan.
    8)Provide high-level management and strategy for laboratory research activities, pursuit of funding opportunities and operations.
  8. Conduct research of grant and business opportunities and lead proposal development processes.
  9. Independently cultivate and manage relationships with current and potential funders.
  10. Plan, develop, analyze and manage budget, including developing multi-year budget forecasts.
  11. Manage budgets for grants including centralized internal control, budget development, and financial reporting and analysis.
  12. Work closely with department pre- and post-award management professionals and the University Research Administration on proposal submission and management.
  13. Oversee the review, approval, and reporting of all expenditures on physical plant, goods and services.
  14. Effectively represent Dr. Lindau and the Lab in high-level internal and external meetings in a manner that advances and champions the impact of our work.
