The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) Office, Danaher Diagnostics, drives global scientific and clinical thought leadership across the six Diagnostic Operating Companies (OpCos) of Danaher (Cepheid, Beckman Coulter, Radiometer, Leica Biosystems, Mammotome, and Hemocue). The CSO office accelerates insights to impact in key disease states of strategic importance and unlocks precision medicine through a delivering on a portfolio of impactful diagnostic solutions. This will be a REMOTE position.

Reporting to the CSO, Danaher Diagnostics, the Director of Operations and Portfolio Development, CSO Office, Danaher Diagnostics, will have the following responsibilities:

  • Develop and run the DH Diagnostics Strategic Innovation Review (SIR) process to manage and deliver on the R&D innovation portfolio from funnel fill and ideation stages through execution and implementation. The role is both strategic and operational and requires interaction with leaders across the organization, from Danaher Corporate EVP and board level to OpCo Presidents, business and R&D leaders. The portfolio will include organic R&D programs as well as inorganic, spanning from biomarker discovery through research use only, clinical trial assay development, and ultimately in vitro diagnostic (IVD) assay development on Danaher medical devices.

  • Be a thought partner and advisor to CSO team. Help distill strategy into operations (actionable plans, teams, approvals) working with various stakeholders and manage portfolio of CSO office activities.

  • Leverage your scientific, clinical, business acumen to evolve, strengthen CSO vision and help in realizing it by enabling initiative/project set up and implementation.

  • Create, launch, run, and manage capability building initiatives.

  • Serve as an integrator, connecting work streams that would otherwise remain siloed and maintain an integrated view.

  • Be a thought partner and sounding board for the CSO. Serve as an honest broker and truth teller, presenting both sides of complex issues while maintaining objectivity. Serve as a confidant without an organizational agenda. Ensure the CSO is always prepared and rarely surprised.

  • Anticipate and solve complex problems and challenges, remove barriers to enable and accelerate innovation. Anticipate problems and be sensitive to issues that require diplomacy. Help CSO office team navigate through uncertainty and risk.

  • Drive communications, reporting, and management reviews.

  • Lead the office of the CSO in defining communications and preparing corresponding reports, briefings, and presentations across stakeholders, including Danaher Diagnostics LT, Scientific Advisory Boards (SABs), Science & Technology (S&T) Board of Director meetings, as well as other internal leadership meetings and ad hoc external meetings.

  • Communicate up, down, and sideways to ensure CSO and other LT members are apprised of progress, key risks, and strategic needs of the CSO organization. Also ensure messaging and visibility to broader organization is cascaded appropriately to drive followership and buy-in.

  • Lead CSO team operations and operating cadence.

  • Operationalize the CSO operating model including design and development of processes to enable the CSO Leadership Team (LT) to achieve their objectives; this includes, but is not limited to, managing CSO LT meetings/agendas, goal setting and reviews including metrics, and team building activities.

  • Drive CSO office efficiency to enable making time, information, and prioritization and resource allocation decision processes more effective (HC, budget management).

  • Execute on significant strategic, operational, and cultural agendas (e.g., developing deeper engagement across Diagnostics scientific and technical talent).

  • Maintain awareness of latest advances in diagnostics and strengthen integration of CSO team into Danaher and external ecosystem.

  • Help manage relationships with the company's scientific partners and study the forces that influence company's strategy, such as academic research, medical advances, and the activity of competitors.

  • Represent the scientific thought leadership brand of the CSO organization and the CSO in a variety of cross-functional interactions, with a collaborative and partnership-oriented positive mindset.

  • Function as extra eyes and ears by pointing out and helping to align teams and stakeholders while acting with humility, maturity, and situational awareness.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Advanced degree (PhD, and/or MS) in a biological science strongly preferred; MBA and top tier consulting experience is a plus. BS or BA Degree in Business, Science or Engineering REQUIRED.

  • Prefer 5+ years in the diagnostics and/or pharmaceutical and/or life science/biotechnology industries.

  • Exceptional ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

  • A collaborative style that will drive trust and followership and inspire people.

  • The ability to envision the culture that the CSO wants to create and a sophisticated mix of emotional intelligence (EQ), judgment, discretion, diplomacy, and political acumen, which enables the COS to interact with powerful direct reports to the CSO and board members with confidence and poise.

  • Proven track record of delivering programs for large and complex institutions.

  • Exquisite ability to see what pressures the leader faces in pushing the company to change and to find ways to lessen them.

  • Ability to combine and apply scientific/technical and business knowledge, and demonstrate strong business acumen and ability to make balanced decisions.

  • This will be a REMOTE position.

  • Domestic and international travel is required (approximately 30%)

The salary range for this role is $132,300 - $200,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
