What You Will Do:

In this highly visible role, the Director of Operations will be charged with leading and improving the Engineered-to-Order growth businesses that span two sites. This individual will help create and mold the strategic vision for the operation. Key focus areas are to drive cultural improvement, execute financial performance targets, enhance our API Operation Advantage lean program, and support the Value Creation Strategy.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead operations at two facilities to achieve all KPI targets (daily, weekly, monthly, and annually) and performance levels by meeting internal and external customer requirements.

  • Support and develop a strong Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) culture with the team by following all safety regulations and maintaining clean and orderly work areas.

  • Facilitate an employee experience and culture aligned with API Heat Transfer's principles, vision, mission, and strategic goals.

  • Motivate, coach, mentor, and lead employees and managers to deliver high performance, while addressing opportunities for improvement. This may involve difficult performance conversations.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives including the established Management Operating System (MOS) and other Continuous Improvement activities (e.g., Kaizen events, Root Cause Analysis, and Value Stream Mapping) to improve throughput and On-Time Delivery, reduce WIP, reduce scrap and waste, and optimize the operation as whole.

  • Help direct the Supply Chain team to align with inventory management, on-time delivery of materials, and production scheduling, by creating a Supply Chain Productivity plan.

  • Utilize data from ERP and other sources to create communication and decision-making tools to drive operational performance, profitable growth, customer focus, and a sense of urgency.

  • Manage operations budget by practicing solid fiscal responsibility, making decisions on staffing, working hours, organizational structure, and materials.

  • Drive high quality through operational processes.

  • Manage performance with annual team goals, assessment of achievement, correction of gaps, and technical skills development.

  • Maintain a high level of presence and connectivity with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Collaborate with the VP & General Manager on strategic business initiatives

INTERFACES WITH:

Reporting directly to the VP & General Manager, the Director of Operations will directly manage the Production Manager, the Quality Manager, the Supply Chain Manager, Continuous Improvement resources, the EH&S Coordinator, and the Facilities Supervisor. The total operations team is approximately 100 people. This individual will also collaborate heavily with other leadership team members, including the heads of Sales, Engineering, Accounting, and Human Resources.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  1. Industrial Operations Experience: The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in an Engineered-to-Order or heavy equipment manufacturing environment that utilizes metals or similar materials, as well as critical processes like welding, metal forming, brazing, assembly, and final inspection testing. The resulting customers include very large OEMs, military, and specialty vehicle.

  2. Leadership Experience: The ideal candidate has a proven track record of influencing, coaching, and mentoring cross-functional teams across a team-leader-designed organization including direct and indirect leadership over manufacturing, supply chain, and quality. The right leader has demonstrated experience developing and coaching their team.

  3. Lean Manufacturing Experience: This individual will have direct, hands-on experience using Lean Manufacturing principles to drive continuous improvement through a workforce empowered by comprehensive training, effective communications, clear operating goals, and recognition for achievement. This person will have a responsibility to own the established Gemba Walk, Production Meeting, Control Room, and KPI review processes, all within the API Operating Advantage program.

  4. Analytical Aptitude: The candidate will be able to use data and reporting to assess performance and guide decision-making. The individual will proactively communicate with the VP/GM on issues, risks, and concerns, and will always be prepared with practical solutions and recommendations.

  5. Cultural Fit: The ideal candidate has a track record of change management and proven success in delivering on commitments to internal and external stakeholders. They will also hold the organization to high standards of accountability, trust, transparency, respect, and teamwork.

  6. Impactful Communication: The ability to communicate effectively with executive-level and cross-functional teams, both verbally and in writing. This person will frequently present monthly business updates to the CEO, CFO, and executive staff.


PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate selected for the position of Director of Operations will be a creative, strategic thinker who is intellectually curious with a demonstrated interest in learning. It will be critical that the candidate can balance the day-to-day tactical requirements of the business while evaluating what is needed for the next 3 - 5 years. This person will also need to be a self-motivated, high-energy individual who can easily function in a high-demand, performance-driven environment. He/she must be accustomed to working on multiple tasks in parallel. This professional must demonstrate strong leadership skills, best demonstrated by the individual's ability to gain credibility with team members and senior management. In this role, the Director of Operations will often present to the CEO, CFO, and other corporate leaders.
