The Director will oversee, direct, plan, market, and implement the oncology service line with direct responsibility for the overall staff of the cancer center in conjunction with the oncology service line Medical Director. This includes the functions of cancer clinical research, medical oncology, radiation oncology, oncology inpatient services, screening, detection, prevention, pastoral services, social services, tumor registry, nutritional services, oncology-related pharmacy, home care, support groups, rehabilitation, patient navigation, survivorship, end-stage care, bereavement counseling for families, cancer center facilities, with liaison/collaborative responsibility to the inpatient oncology unit. The duties and responsibilities of the Director are generally understood by the parties to be as follows:

Responsibilities, Duties and Standards of Director:

  • Administrative Functions

  • Serve as the director on cancer committee;

  • Coordinate with hospital administration to achieve the goals of the cancer center and the oncology service line;

  • Assist with the development, coordination, and supervision of all operating policies and procedures for the cancer center;

  • Assist with control of the budget and spending appropriate or donated to the cancer center and service line from private, state, and federal sources;

  • Responsible for program efficiency and effectiveness through benchmarking and continuous quality improvement.

  • Departmental Functions

  • Hire, train, direct, and evaluate and discipline cancer center employees;

  • Provide guidance to managers in dealing with their employees;

  • Direct the daily activities of the cancer center and oversee all cancer services;

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the cancer program, services and projects. Work directly with the Medical Director to identify and plan cancer program functions that increase the utilization of oncology services and is responsible for implementing these functions;

  • Act as a consultant to hospital administration regarding the cancer program, its equipment, facilities, staff, operations, etc.;

  • Provide administrative support, planning, medical involvement, financial support, etc., to facilitate programs and services;

  • Work with physicians and other staff members when carrying out program objectives, resolving problems, etc.

  • Coordinate with the IT Department purchase and implementation of new software applications and implementation.

  • Cancer Center and Program Policy Development

  • Assist with the development of the rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to the cancer center;

  • Assist with the development of written policies and procedures dealing with standards of care for the cancer center and cancer program;

  • Develop the cancer center's quality assurance and quality and process improvement programs;

  • In collaboration with the Medical Director ensure that the mission, goals, and objectives of the cancer center and service line are considered in all areas of cancer program implementation and that programs are cost-effective and community-oriented;

  • Oversee, obtain, and maintain cancer center and program accreditation and standards in compliance with national organizations such as the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, American College of Radiology, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, etc.

  • Works in collaboration with Roswell Park Cancer Institute to further Samaritan's integration and alignment within the Roswell Community Cancer Network

  • Research Program

  • Work with the appropriate personnel to develop standards of care and clinical pathways for the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, supportive care, survivorship plans, palliative care, end-of-life care needs, etc. of cancer patients;

  • Identify, develop, implement, and market access to clinical treatment protocols;

  • Identify and implement appropriate data management;

  • Manage the research budget.

  • Marketing Functions

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of ongoing relationships between practicing oncologists and referring physicians through direct and indirect efforts;

  • Assist with the development and implementation of a cancer program marketing plan that is consistent with the overall marketing plan of the hospital, including direct to referring physician communications and education, newspapers, radio and/or television, articles/advertisements, brochures, direct mail, health fairs, etc.;

  • Serve as a liaison between cancer specialists and hospital administration as well as among individual cancer specialists;

  • Oversee the development and implementation of all cancer screening and outreach programs;

  • Oversee the conduct of market research activities that involve the cancer program;

  • Assist with packaging of cancer care services to ensure that services are offered in a manner consistent with the goals of the cancer center and cancer program.

  • Oncology Service Line Program Development

Prepare a 3-year cancer program business plan that includes goals and timeframes for each year. The business plan should include volume projections, enhancement and/or initiation of cancer programs and services, facilities and technologies initiatives, marketing strategies, physician recruitment strategies, etc., and should be updated on an annual basis. The Year 1 Business Plan should be completed within six months of employment and the full five-year plan should be completed within twelve months of employment.
