Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing department's programs and activities in accordance with current local, state, and federal guidelines governing long-term care. Develop and maintain written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day operations.

  • Develop an annual nursing operational budget and manage performance against budget.

  • Develop and maintain an ongoing Quality Improvement program for the nursing department services regarding quality measures, resident satisfaction surveys, and state and federal compliance.

  • Works collaboratively with HIM personnel regarding medical records and encourages physician compliance within the medical records in accordance with State & Federal regulations.

  • Supervises nursing purchasing department personnel and ensures appropriate supplies are maintained.

  • Supervises Staff Development personnel and ensures that new hires complete the required orientation, and that mandatory in-service education is provided to all departments. Interviews, hires, schedules, evaluates, provides performance improvement, and discharges nursing personnel as needed. Maintains/creates department job descriptions.

  • Supervises the MDS and MMQ nurses, ensuring that the MMQs, MDS', and care planning processes are in compliance.

  • Makes daily rounds to ensure that nursing personnel perform their work assignments, provide appropriate care, and maintain a neat and sanitary living environment for the residents.

  • Attends committee meetings: Medical Director, safety, QI, department head, dental, OBRA, and others as assigned by the Administrator.

  • Investigate allegations of resident abuse/neglect/complaints, interview staff, and write and submit reports to an administrator for review and to the DPH.

  • Ensures all adverse actions relative to licensed and C.N.A. personnel are appropriately reported to licensing boards and registries as required.

  • Participates in State, Federal, JCAHO, and any other agency surveys and inspections.

  • Participates in developing, implementing, and maintaining Plan(s) of Corrections related to nursing department deficiencies by any agency.

  • Conducts clinical reviews of residents, addressing falls, skin, pharmacy, infection control, and other resident-focused reviews, which may include physical hands-on assessment.

  • Participates in the clinical selection of residents to be admitted to the facility.

Education/Experience/Licensure/Certification

  • Registered Nurse with a current unencumbered RN license to practice in the State of Massachusetts

  • The candidate must be a self-starter with a positive, cheerful, and enthusiastic disposition. The candidate must also be dependable, warm, and caring toward people and the elderly.

  • Able to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team.

  • Knowledge of skilled and long-term care nursing regulations.

  • Must mediate in resident, family, employee, and community situations.

  • Able to speak, read, and write effectively in English.

  • Must be able to relate and work well with the ill, disabled, elderly, and, at times, emotionally upset or hostile people.

  • Able to perform tasks which may be physically demanding such as pushing, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Effective communication and organization skills are essential; creativity, flexibility, and the ability to oversee several tasks simultaneously are required. Computer skills are necessary to work in software programs. A demonstrated ability to deal with all employee situations in a calm and fair manner
