Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, a 122-bed general acute care community hospital that serves as a regional healthcare resource for the 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut. The hospital was founded in 1916 as a gift by industrialist Uri T. Hungerford in memory of his mother Charlotte, who had a "boundless energy and dedication for helping others." He envisioned a community hospital to be a beacon of hope and a place of comfort for the ill and injured of our region, and through his generosity and support, made it a reality. Today, CHH offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including general medicine and surgery, maternity and pediatrics, radiology, obstetrics, cardiology, urology, Orthopaedics, and behavioral health.

Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing, Behavioral Health, with direct oversight of unit operations for the Behavioral Health Inpatient unit and Acute Behavioral unit within the emergency department, will provide strategic leadership in collaboration with the medical and provider leadership team. The Director will be outcomes driven, designing creative solutions and building bridges among the organization's stakeholders to advance key initiatives and promote innovation. As a Patient Safety Champion, the Director provides leadership in a range of critical areas including patient experience, care logistics, employee engagement and lean management.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides leadership to the nurse managers and nurse coordinators in identifying resources required to achieve quality and safe patient care results. Utilizes lean framework to drive excellent results

  • Accountable for the operating budget for units and related services and assures appropriate resource allocations. Works closely with nurse managers to adhere to budgetary guidelines and prepare budgets for each unit. Prepares and/or examines various financial and non-financial reports and analyzes the impact of actual and/or proposed operational changes in meeting corporate and divisional initiatives

  • Assures that the unit staff has appropriate continuing education and quality improvement programs to meet clinical changes and challenges. Develops, implements and evaluates programs to promote recruitment, retention, development and continuing education of nursing staff

  • Collaborates with the Quality and Safety Director to implement best practices to bring excellence to patient care and experience

  • Collaborates with the administration, peers, interdisciplinary colleagues and nurse educators with regard to the patient care model with a focus on aligning nursing practice to ensure consistency and continuity across the organization

  • Attends Northwest Nurse Council meetings and other Northwest regional leadership meetings to support consistency of nursing practice across the organization

  • Acts as a liaison with other hospital departments to meet the clinical, operational and financial management information needs of the hospital and meet system wide objectives

  • Bachelor's and Master's degrees are required. At least one degree must be in Nursing

  • Current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut

  • Five plus years of progressive leadership experience is required

  • Experience within a complex behavioral health nursing setting

  • While serving as a visionary and change agent will maintain a balance with the local geographic and institutional culture

  • The ability to work with diverse groups of providers, clinicians, nursing staff and all disciplines and appreciate their contributions to the strategic direction of the healthcare system.

  • Intellectually facile, will have the ability to be conceptually creative, grasp large amounts of information quickly, and articulate conclusions in a clear manner

  • Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization

  • A creative, forward thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders

  • A demonstrated track record designing strategies and delivering solutions in areas including, but not limited to, patient experience, patient safety, employee engagement and workflow redesign

  • Highly effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Strong communications skills required - both written and verbal
