JOB DESCRIPTION: Support the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery staff by providing direct assistance to the doctors and performing any essential duties as requested by the doctors. Performs room cleaning and stocking duties. Performs other related duties as required. Cleans and washes processor before weekend. Washesfixer and developer separately. Cleans fixer pan and roller and developer pan and roller separately. Sets to dry and labels fixer and developer. Cleans bed after each patient leaves. Replaces the bed with new sheets, blankets, pillowcase, gowns, and cap. Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments using klenzyme and ultrasonic washers. Wash, clean, dry, sterilize, and place instruments back in appropriate shelves. Wraps extraction tray, hose, and bowl with sterilization wrap before sterilizing. Tests biological indicators in sterilizers to make sure autoclaves are operating properly. Performs routine morning checks including autoclave, operating room, refrigerator, EKG machine, vacuum level, oxygen levels and refrigerator temperature. Replenishes developer and fixer fluids in the processor. Closing duties include turning off processor, x-ray machine, autoclaves, emptying fluids from ultrasonic equipment, stocking shelves in patient rooms, storing cameras, and putting up drug keys. Stocks all patient exam rooms. Makes sure that adequate supplies of alcohol, adhesive removals, tongue blades, cotton tips, mirrors, gauze, irrigation, headrest covers, barrier films, patient towels, and small, medium, and large gloves are available. Stocks and order supplies. Verifies supplies received on the inventory list. Puts supplies in specific locations. Stocks and orders clean laundry. Stores laundry bags, blankets, patient gowns, pillowcase, and sheets. Folds shirts, pants, and towels before stocking. Monitors clinic schedule and arrival of patients for examination; regulates patient flow in the clinic to ensure that the physician's and patient's appointment is conducted within the scheduled time frame. Takes panorex and ceph x-rays as requested by the doctors. Processes films and mounts x-rays in patient rooms. Labels the films with patient name, date, and assistant's initials. Duplicates X-rays according to the light intensity of original film when requested. Duplicates patient slide films with duplicating camera. Sets films to dry, writes patient name and date on each picture. Put in envelope and give it to insurance coordinators. Take Polaroid's of all orthognathic and TMJ patients. Take clinical pictures of orthognathic patients. Takes facial shots and intraoral shots. Positions camera appropriately for each type of shot. Gives patient retractors to retract cheeks. Sets up rooms for extractions. Puts out extraction trays, surgical kits, IV bags; hose, bow drill, and nosepiece; sets up tray with blades, syringe, local anesthetic, gauze, irrigation, suture, and tetracycline. Connects drill with hose, turns on gas, runs and tests drill. Sets up biopsy kits according to instructions. Arranges instruments in rooms with biopsy bag, paper, and jar. Assists doctors with procedures as requested including suctioning, retracting, and irrigating the operating field. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Makes sure rooms are clean before seating patients. Replaces barrier films, headrest covers, and patient towels before seating each patient. Sprays seat with coverage spray for disinfecting purposes. Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Education. Work requires CPR certification and X-ray certification. Certification from an accredited Oral & Maxillofacial program or Dental Assisting Program is a plus. One to two years experience in an Oral Surgery practice. On the job training can be done. Or any equivalent combination of relevant education and or experience.
