The Position

The National Women's Law Center (NWLC) seeks a Director of Nominations and Democracy to lead and manage the Law Center's work on strategies surrounding judicial nominations and growing democracy work. In partnership with the VP for Strategy and Policy, and with the support of the Federal Policy Manager for Strategy and Policy, the Director will lead and manage NWLC's Supreme Court and Executive nominations portfolio, which includes conducting research and analysis, as well as leading our campaign-related work with internal and external partners.

This is a full-time, exempt position of 37.5 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Judicial and Executive Nominations:

  • Steer judicial nominations strategy, collaborating with Vice President for Strategy and Policy and coordinating with program teams;

  • Review all judicial nominations content, including letters, memos, blogs, and digital/email content;

  • Lead the work with Fair Courts Task Force;

  • Maintain regular communication with Hill, White House and other stakeholders

  • Oversee the Law Center's Supreme Court nomination preparation and campaign approach;

  • Manage research and pre-nomination advocacy of prospective administrative personnel and judicial applicants

  • Manage table of women's organizations engaged in judicial nominations work;

  • Manage and lead on issues related to the federal judiciary.

  • Coordinate the Center's cross-cutting executive nominations campaigns in partnership with colleagues on the Campaigns and Communications team.

  • Review all content, including letters, memos, blogs, and digital/email content;

  • Steer overarching programmatic strategy and prioritization

  • Coordinate with other program teams to track and maintain executive nominations campaign

  • Manage process for tracking and submitting recommendations for political appointments.

Democracy Portfolio:

  • Further define and lead the organization's growing democracy portfolio, which includes voting rights, civil rights, and institutional reforms as they intersect with gender justice issues;

  • Coordinate across the Law Center on issues that intersect with democracy so to ensure a cohesive organizational strategy;

  • Support policy work with women's community, including representing the organization in coalition work;

  • Develop new resources and policy products.

General:

  • Represent the organization at external coalition tables, Hill meetings, briefings, conferences, media appearances, and other speaking engagements;

  • Conceptualize, draft, and lead the development of written products, legislative testimony, talking points, letters, and other materials;

  • Lead legal and policy analysis in response to requests from policy makers;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A law degree or advanced policy degree and admission to a state bar with the ability to waive into the DC Bar if not already admitted

  • A minimum 7 years of relevant experience;

  • Experience in program management, people management and supervision, building and/or staffing coalitions, leading advocacy campaigns;

  • Demonstrated ability to build long-term collaborative relationships with key organizational and external partners;

  • Ability to work closely with a diverse group of external partners including coalition partners, community leaders, Hill staff and other stakeholders;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated meeting facilitation skills;

  • Strong understanding of congressional process and procedural rules to inform legislative strategies.

Additional preferred skills and knowledge:

  • Existing network of relationships on Capitol Hill, executive agencies, or state legislatures

  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working on gender and racial equity and center communities of color in their approach to work.

Key Relationships

The Director will report to the Vice President of Strategy and Policy and will work with members of the Strategy and Policy team, the Campaigns and Communications team, colleagues across NWLC, and a diverse group of external partners. The Director supervises the Federal Policy Manager for Strategy and Policy and may supervise semester interns.

Compensation & Benefits

This role is designated at the Director level and a salary within the range of $129,700-$156,857 will be provided to the successful candidate who has at least 7 years of experience directly relevant to this role, consistent with the National Women's Law Center's compensation framework. The successful candidate's salary within this range will be determined by the number of years of relevant experience they bring to the role.

The Center offers a comprehensive benefits package, and four weeks of annual vacation.

NWLC is a non-profit organization whose headquarters and staff are based in Washington, D.C. at our new office at 1350 Eye Street N.W. This role is based in D.C. and will be eligible for some telework while also being expected to work in person on a regular basis. The successful candidate will need to live in or relocate to the DMV (broadly defined as DC, Maryland, or Virginia).

The first 90 days of employment will be considered a probationary period.

Classification

This position is a management role and as such is not included in the union-represented bargaining unit, NWLC United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70.
