TITLE: Director of New London High School Multi-Magnet Campus

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools

SUPERVISES: Assistant Principals, School Secretaries and School and School Security

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month administrative position. Other terms are set by the Board of Education in accordance with the New London Administrators' Education Association contract.

SCHOOL TURN-A-ROUND LEADERSHIP: New London Public School District believes that positive change is possible when five core strategies for school improvement are implemented together as a comprehensive package. These strategies include: 1. Ensuring every student has an excellent teacher and a school leader committed to their success; 2. Setting clear, consistent standards for academic achievement and establishing a school-wide focus on preparing all students for college and career; 3. Increasing instructional time; 4. Providing small group, differentiated instruction to students, daily, using highly qualified and well-trained instructors; and 5. Collecting assessment data frequently to monitor each student's academic progress and tailoring instruction to meet the needs of all learners.


The NLHSMMC Principal directs and supervises the school operations in accordance with policies and regulations established by the Board of Education. He/She provides leadership in creating and managing a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment where all students excel and staff is empowered and shares the vision of high performance and collaboration, while engaging parents and community partners in the support of student achievement.


Instructional Leadership-

  • Lead the school's vision, mission, and strategic goals to support college-readiness and academic and socio-emotional success for all students; develops and implements School Improvement Plans

  • Drive rapid and dramatic instructional improvements by implementing strategies in line with the priority areas identified in the School Turn-a-Round Plan

  • Co-support the design and implementation of rigorous, standards-based instruction with measurable outcomes, alongside Content Department Supervisors and Assistant Directors

  • Be sure all staff are participating in an observation and feedback cycle that ensures continuous improvement in teaching and learning, aligned to all approved evaluation systems

  • Analyze student achievement results regularly to identify areas of need and inform school improvement efforts

  • Develop and implement a professional development plan to address identified areas of need

  • Develop a collegial environment that supports teacher leadership, collaboration, and growth-mindset

  • Co-coordinate all Special Education programs alongside Special Education Supervisors

  • Co-coordinate all EL and Bilingual programs alongside EL/Bilingual Supervisors

  • Provide strong and collaborative leadership with an honest, transparent, and inclusive style that supports high student outcomes and educational excellence

  • Model an unwavering commitment to high academic achievement, social-emotional, and whole child development of all students

Management and Operations-

  • Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for students, staff, and families

  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of diverse, highly qualified staff

  • Align people, time and money (strategically) to drive student achievement

  • Apply teacher and staff performance management systems in a way that ensures a culture of continuous improvement, support, and accountability

  • Adhere to all federal and state mandates and regulations (IDEA, 504, Title IX, SRBI, etc.)

  • Comply with all state and federal laws, policies, and collective bargaining agreements

  • Manage all aspects of awarded Turn-A-Round Grants (State and Federal) aligned to the School's Improvement Plan; write to new grant opportunities as the they arise

  • Assist with the development and implementation of the District Improvement Plan, School Improvement Plan, Building Construction and Magnet Operations Plans

  • Enforce guidelines to maintain proper discipline and conduct

  • Supervise and coordinate the use of the high school campus facilities

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of district-wide policies

  • Consult and work with appropriate central office administrators with respect to the school's personnel, equipment, supplies, and curriculum, instruction and assessment

  • Demonstrate knowledge and effective use of technology in instruction, management, and communication

  • Ensure a positive school climate that promotes students to have leadership roles and actively engage in learning

  • Safeguard the safety, health, and welfare of students and staff members

  • Lead instructional experiences to promote multi-cultural curriculum and cultural responsiveness

  • Facilitate turn-a-round work, leading to an increase in student outcomes and creation of a united, positive culture of achievement

Family and Community Engagement-

  • Advocate for and engage family and community to support all school turn-a-round initiatives.

  • Strengthen teacher and staff capacity to cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families of diverse backgrounds and with community members that support student achievement and student well-being

  • Manage sub-grants for after school enrichments and community partnerships

  • Facilitate the high school-level parent engagement committees

  • Demonstrate experience in community school practices, building partnerships and resources for a school, and a willingness to work with various community partners

  • Demonstrate outstanding communication skills with the ability to foster strong relationships with all members of the school community (students, teachers, families and community at large) to advance the school's mission and vision


  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools

  • Connecticut Intermediate/Administrative Supervisory Certificate (092)

  • At least three years of successful experience as a teacher

  • At least three years of successful experience as a building leader

  • Background knowledge to raise achievement scores in math, reading and chronic absenteeism

  • Experiences with writing and managing school improvement grants

  • Knowledge of Magnet School Program development, requirements and administration


  • Master's, 6th Year and/or Doctorate Degree from an accredited institution

  • Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred but not required

  • Experience leading in an urban, high-poverty, and/or turn-a-round school

  • Extensive knowledge of magnet school program development and implementation

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in a?racially and ethnically diverse?communities

  • Demonstrated success improving underperforming student achievement and making a difference in high needs communities

  • Diverse multi-cultural background

Under the direction of Manager of Employee Health & Safety, coordinates, and/or provides guidance to the staffs of Occupational Health Services, Compensation and Benefits, Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control (HEIC), Legal Affairs /Risk Management, Institute for Excellence (IFE), Delivery Network Employee Health & Safety Committee, Human Resource Information System (HRIS), Human Resources (HR), Plant Engineering, Facilities Design & Construction (FD & C), Accreditation Safety and Regulatory Affairs (ASRA) , and others as needed for consultation on employee Health and Safety matters; including OSHA regulatory requirements. Ensures that health and safety training and content applying to healthcare workers are created and conducted in compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Conducts comprehensive and ongoing reviews of federal and/or state standards that are applicable to the health care/hospital working environment and designs comprehensive compliance plans, assigning responsibilities for safety protocol development, where necessary, to the appropriate department, group and/or individual. * 1.1 Member of the Delivery Network Employee Health and Safety Committee. Provides weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual employee injury/illness reports as required by Worker's compensation Commission, State of CT and as requested and/or required by the TJC, and other regulatory agencies and departments * 2. Conducts ongoing review of all YNHHS/Delivery Network job descriptions to determine health and safety training requirements and computer-based training category for each based on position, department, job duties and level of risk. Performs entry of health and safety training requirements into Healthstream. Performs entry of healthcare respirator fit testing requirements by department and position into Human Resources/Lawson database. * 2.1 Collaborates with IFE, Center for Professional Practice Excellence (CPPE) and HEIC on content of new employee orientation and appropriate facilities safety personnel, annual mandatory occupational safety and health and infection control training updates. * 3. Conducts comprehensive and ongoing reviews of federal and/or state standards that are applicable to the health care/hospital working environment and designs comprehensive compliance plans, assigning responsibilities for safety protocol development, where necessary, to the appropriate department, group and/or individual. * 3.1 Supports the activities of the Delivery Network Employee Health and Safety Committee through collaborative quality improvement team participation and assistance in research, data collection, analysis and reporting. * 4. Surveys compliance in practice including, but not limited to, bloodborne pathogens, airborne pathogens , respirator use, health and safety training, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and exposure monitoring. Submits report of findings to Executive Director of Occupational Health Services and Medical Director of Pop Health/Occupational Health (and/or others) as requested. * 4.1 As requested, assists with regularly scheduled hazard surveillance inspections throughout all clinical, public/common, mechanical, support, and office/business spaces as evidenced by written inspection reports using federal/OSHA regulations, TJC standards, state, local fire and building codes, CDC and Infection Control guidelines, and recommended safe work practices including but not limited to ergonmics. * 5. Conducts employee safety activities to identify and mitigate the risk for employee injury, including but not limited to, ergonomic evaluation (assessment of employee work stations and work task analysis), provides training to employees on patient and material handling, conducts accident investigations on employee injuries, maintains the required OSHA injury data, provides safety presentations as required, and provides injury data analysis, injury report development and corrective action planning to reduce the risk of injuries to our employees. * 5.1 Working with the guidelines provided by HPI, perform SSE classification on injuries within home delivery network. Continuously review and update classifications. * 6. Provide coverage and support in the Occupational Health clinics and special workgroups/task forces as necessary within individual scope of practice. * 6.1 Maintain active membership in committees related to (but not limited to): aggressive behavior, safe patient handling, bloodborne pathogens, ergonomics, slips/trips/falls and others as applicable. Qualifications EDUCATION Bachelors degree in a related field required; RN preferred. Master of Science degree in occupational safety and health management or industrial hygiene preferred EXPERIENCE Five years in occupational health and/or health and safety required. Performance management training preferred. Recommended but not required is certification by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc., Board of Certified Healthcare Safety Management, Industrial Hygienists, First Aid and BLS certification preferred. Demonstrated participation in OSHA and TJC compliance training. Demonstrated experience in implementing hospital -wide training and/or compliance programs. Experience with OSHA compliance preferred. LICENSURE Certification in ergonomic evaluation is preferred. SPECIAL SKILLS Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills. Must be self-motivating and have the ability to exercise independent judgement in the development of plans and protocols to be submitted for approval and day-to-day work routine. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations and DPH and TJC standards. Must be familiar with the following applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and appropriate HTML database and report writer software; and SYSTOC and Epic programs. Must be able to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate multiple facets of occupational health and safety. Must have a willingness to learn and apply knowledge. Must be able to conduct training sessions to la rge groups of employees. PHYSICAL DEMAND Valid Connecticut driver's license as off-site evaluations are required. Position duties and responsibilities may require prolonged standing and walking; use of sight, hearing and touch; and the moving /lifting (or assisting with) employees and supplies/equipment of varying weights in the course of clinical duties or work evaluations.
