Job Description
Position: Director of Music & Organist
Summary: Christ United Methodist Church is a vibrant and welcoming congregation in downtown Rochester, MN. We live out our mission to be Grace in the City through worship, service, pursuing justice, growing in faith, and building inclusive community.
The Director of Music & Organist provides music accompaniment during traditional worship services, funerals and memorial services, weddings, special events, and other church-related activities. They also lead and coordinate music ministry in collaboration with music staff and volunteers. Balancing tradition and innovation, the Director of Music & Organist will invite the congregation to experience music ranging from Bach to The Beatles, and hymnody ranging from traditional sacred works to modern composers.
The Director of Music & Organist is a part-time, 20 hours per week position. These hours include the traditional worship service (Sundays 9 a.m. with music warm up at 8 a.m.), weekly choir rehearsal (Wednesdays 7 p.m. -8 p.m. and other times as required), and individual rehearsal time.
Compensation: $22,000 - $26,000 commensurate with experience.
Benefits: This position has the flexibility to choose between two options:
Option 1: medical, dental, and vision insurance; retirement savings plan with employer matching.
Option 2: increased cash compensation.
The total value of the two options is designed to be comparable.
Reporting: The Director of Music & Organist reports to the Executive Pastor.

Private Teaching: The Director of Music & Organist will have use of the church organ and pianos for teaching private lessons and recitals if desired (lessons and recitals will be on personal time and will be compensated by the student).Any lessons or recitals in the church building will be coordinated around church programs and activities.
Position Responsibilities:
Play the organ and piano during scheduled worship services, including Sunday services and special events
Attend and accompany choir rehearsals, music practices, and music warm ups
Coordinate with the Sanctuary Choir Director, Bell Choir Director, children's music group directors, and other musicians to enhance the overall musical experience
Coordinate with the pastors to select appropriate hymns and service music in coordination with worship themes
Coordinate with the pastors and office staff to coordinate music ministry rehearsals and performances
Actively recruit and audition new participants to serve in worship and ensembles
Collaborate with pastors and staff to integrate music ministry with the congregation's mission and priorities
Provide support for funerals, weddings, and other church events as requested (compensation for funerals and weddings are paid separately)
Coordinate and schedule any necessary contract musicians or other artists for worship
Arrange for qualified substitute organist or pianist when absent for church services (including funerals, memorial services, and weddings) and coordinate leave and absences with the pastors in advance
Maintain and care for the sanctuary organ and piano, reporting any issues to the Director of Operations and Building Manager
Participate in worship planning meetings and staff meetings
Requirements:
Commitment to the mission and vision of Christ United Methodist Church
Excellent organ skills, with a strong understanding of various musical styles
Strong piano skills, with the ability to play various musical styles
A degree in organ or music is preferred but not required
Experience in leading worship through hymn playing
Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with clergy, church staff, choir members, and other musicians
Availability to work 20 hours per week, including weekends and special events
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
A commitment to enhancing the worship experience through music
