Filled with more than 330 girls in grades 5-8 and 45 faculty/staff members, the Middle School of St. Catherines School is a vibrant, exciting community of learners. We seek a Director of Middle School to begin work July 1, 2019 to work with us to develop the next generation of creative, courageous, and competent leaders.

One of the largest girls school in the country, St. Catherine's School is an Episcopal day school in Richmond, Virginia, founded in 1890 enrolling 989 girls age 3 to grade 12. Located on a 16-acre campus in the western part of the city with a 145 acres outdoor education and athletics space 8.5 miles from the school, St. Catherine's core values include pursuing academic excellence, developing character, nurturing spiritual growth, celebrating individuals, and building community.

The Middle School is a cohesive community, designed to nurture and challenge girls during early adolescence. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to seek creative solutions, and to take risks as a part of learning. To facilitate this process, the curriculum focuses on critical thinking and a balance between creative and skill-related activities. The Middle School program places equal emphasis on the moral development of each student by developing personal integrity, leadership skills, and a sense of self as a global citizen with a desire to serve the community. Through the curriculum and spiritual life, each girl is encouraged to recognize her own uniqueness and respect differences in others. Because of the great diversity in developmental rates and student needs, the Middle School program seeks to provide an environment that fosters joy in learning.

Highlights of the Middle School experience include learning to map the world from memory, a Grade 5 class trip to Washington, D.C., Grade 6 class trip to New York City, Grade 7 trip to the Outer Banks of Virginia, and a Grade 8 trip the Chesapeake Bay. Teaching and learning resources include advisories, a counseling and resource program, chapel, community service, Exploration Periods (during which girls can work on areas of interest), Big Sister/Little Sister program with Lower School students, performing arts, athletics (e.g., swimming pool, indoor track, exercise center), and Strong Circles (a cross-grade program designed to increase connections and strengthen community).


The Director of Middle School sets the tone for the division, reflecting high professional standards, honesty, integrity, and a commitment to academic rigor, along with a demonstrated dedication to excellence in independent school education preparing young women for leadership and success in todays world.

The successful candidate will be a proven educator and leader who has vision, decisiveness, compassion, love of working with children, and organizational skills to lead a highly skilled faculty and staff. The candidate will be a master teacher or experienced academic administrator with excellent written and oral communication skills who has experience working with all constituents, with a focus on students, parents, and faculty. He or she will employ best practices and possess an excellent academic background including an advanced degree.

DUTIES Responsibilities include program planning and administration, supervision of school age children, and day to day operations of child care center. Specific duties include interacting and building relationships with children and families; facilitating positive communications between the Y, program participants and school officials; supervising on-site staff; designing, planning and implementing age appropriate developmental activities and programs; ensuring that child care licensing standards and association quality standards are adhered to; maintaining and monitoring site and equipment; supporting all branch youth development programs with food and supply procurement; and attending and leading child care trainings. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must possess a minimum of one year of supervisory programmatic youth development experience. A degree in a related field is preferred, and candidates MUST be able to meet the Virginia Department of Social Services' requirements for Program Directors. Applicants should possess excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to build strong relationships with staff, youth and families. Energy, initiative, and creativity are desired, as well as budgeting and program administration experience. Candidates must have a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license in good standing and be at least 21 years of age. CPR, First Aid and MAT certifications required within 90 days of employment.
