DIRECTOR OF MENTORING SERVICES

DEFINITION

Newark Board of Education (NBOE) seeks a dynamic leader who will develop, coordinate, and implement a mentor program for the District's youth that aligns with internship and employment opportunities. This role will partner with NBOE programs and collaborate with local and regional district partners to develop and implement work-based learning opportunities for high school students, which lead to increased equity and access for students to post-secondary and other career opportunities. The Director will also participate in the development and coordination of schoolwide programs and services to support student success as well as the delivery professional learning and training programs for educators and mentors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.

  • School Administrator Certification and/or Principal Certification.

  • Five (5) years of experience in the field of education coordinating programs regionally or across multiple sites and settings, building successful partnerships with community-based agencies, nonprofit organizations, K-12 schools, and institutions of higher education strongly desired.

  • Strong organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong attention to detail.

  • Transparent and high integrity leadership.

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).

  • Self-motivated and proactive individual who can work independently.

  • Demonstrates successful experience working with a diverse population of students.

  • Capable of building pathways to career opportunities and supporting adults building adult protective relationships with students.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitates, collaborates and leads the development, coordination, collaboration and implementation of mentoring programs for all NBOE school sites including the ongoing development and evaluation of the program that includes recruitment, media, mentor training, mentor placement, and program monitoring.

  • Develops partnerships to provide resources, identify funding, build capacity, and aid in the development and implementation of mentor programs that support student success.

  • Reviews and enhances current mentoring initiatives.

  • Meets with Corporations, Community, and Higher Education partners to help build a pool of mentors including but not limited to the fields of health, law enforcement, culinary, and educational careers.

  • Organizes, develops, and conducts monthly professional development and training on various topics for School Based Mentoring Coordinators to support the social, academic, and career success of students.

  • Launches regular scheduled individualized coaching/professional development sessions for School Based Mentoring Coordinators.

  • Adopts the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring Handbook (the national standard) to all mentoring services in NBOE high schools and providing the required training for all School Based Mentoring Coordinators.

  • Roll outs of a District wide School Based Mentoring initiative "Connected" at a minimum of five (5) high schools in Fall 2024. Five (5) additional in Spring 2025.

  • Coordinates the use of a data system to regularly collect mentoring student data and provide reports to meet grant deliverables supporting ongoing analysis and continuous program improvement.

  • Identifies and collaborates with educational, industry, and community partners to establish, promote, expand and maintain College and Career pathways.

  • Facilitates the development of inclusive student outreach strategies and recruitment activities to ensure enrollment is open to all students.

  • Develops and facilitates online professional learning communities, meetings, and trainings.

  • Collects program data, prepares reports and maintains records related to assigned activities.

  • Collaborates with community college and community partners to support internships for NBOE high school students.

  • Assists educators in providing intervention and focused support for high school students participating in NBOE mentoring programs.

  • Work with the Director of Student Life to increase and facilitate a community of practice for NBOE counseling programs to increase mentor and mentorship opportunities.

  • Directs and supervises the work of assigned staff.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Student Support

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

  • Salary: $151,500 to $169,500

  • Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months

  • Union Affiliation: City Association of Supervisors and Administrators (C.A.S.A.)
