The Director of Marketing position will work to cultivate a safe, anti-racist, equitable and inclusive community, and environment. This will be done through education as well as the identification and removal of barriers for staff, faculty, and/or participants.

Occupational Summary

Position supportive - Onsite position

This is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the Business & Finance Manager of Recreation & Physical Education. The Director is a strategic and creative individual responsible for the development, direction, and evaluation of a comprehensive marketing program.

This role includes educating the community about Recreation & Physical Education's offerings and being a leader on campus in recreation, health, and wellness education. The Director will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity and utilize evidence-based decision-making to ensure the mission, vision and values of the department are prominent in all communication efforts. This position will supervise and manage a full-time Assistant Director and represent Recreation & Physical Education at university-level special events.

Work Performed

Responsible for the development, direction and evaluation of a comprehensive marketing and branding strategy for the department's services, programs, and facilities.

Coordinates the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of the Assistant Director of Marketing and part-time employees.

Develops and executes, from conception to production, a wide array of publicity, promotional, communication and marketing materials utilizing a variety of print and digital media.

Produces and maintains an active plan and timeline for all marketing campaigns to include evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of campaigns.

Continuously evaluates, updates, and enhances the departmental outreach channels, such as the website, print materials, registration portal (MyRec), social media, digital displays, etc.

Manages the department's website design and content management in an accurate and timely manner.

Manages the department's registration portal (MyRec) and facilitates collaborative efforts with programmers to ensure content and organization of the portal is conducive to consumer needs.

Maintains the department email account, effectively responding to inquiries regarding all areas of the department and funneling responses to the appropriate area's inbox for further follow-up. Is responsible for the monthly department newsletter.

Assesses effectiveness and satisfaction of marketing and outreach strategies on an ongoing basis.

Oversees the Marketing budget, including a departmental Special Events sub-set. Ensures effective use of funds and is the primary recorder of expenses and reconciliation through department procurement practices.

Coordinates and leads outreach opportunities at campus orientations, involvement fairs, and other campus-wide programs

Provides overall leadership and facilitates ongoing planning meetings with program areas and Administrative Staff.

Serves as a liaison between Recreation and Physical Education, Duke Athletics, Student Affairs, and other off-campus groups for outreach initiatives and special events, such as Orientation, Blue Devil Days, Last Day Of Class, etc.

Provides event planning resources and guidance for departmental and program events, such as Rec Fest and End of Year Staff Celebration.

Supports and helps progress the university and department's commitment to anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree from accredited institution.

Experience

Two or more years of professional work experience in advertising, marketing, media, promotions, graphic arts or public relations

Preferred Qualifications:

Education

Master's degree from accredited institution in Marketing, Graphic Design, Communications, Recreation Administration, Sport Management, or related field.

Experience

Four or more years of professional work experience in advertising, marketing, media, promotions, graphic arts or public relations

Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

Ability to communicate with diverse populations.

Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to customer service orientation.

Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships.

Ability to think creatively and proactively.

Utilize good judgement; reliability; initiative and resourcefulness.

Experience and competency in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop with the ability to learn new software programs.

Shares the responsibility of the mission, strategic planning and goals for Recreation and Physical Education.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires communications and marketing skills normally acquired through a bachelor's degree in a related field.

Experience

Work generally requires two years related experience in advertising, OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE marketing, media, promotions, graphic arts or public relations.
