Position Summary:

The Director of Learning Technologies provides strategic leadership and support for the effective integration of learning technologies and the learning management system for undergraduate medical education at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (SOM). The incumbent is responsible for oversight of the existing learning management system and will lead the implementation and roll-out of a new LMS, resolving complex issues independently. The position collaborates with all stakeholders to ensure strategic management of the UME curriculum.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the administration, support, and maintenance of SOM's learning management system (LMS).

  • Coordinate LMS vendor on change management and system upgrades with internal stakeholders to ensure LMS configuration meets the needs of the school and supports continuous curricular improvement.

  • Provide high quality end user support by employing excellent customer service skills and technical expertise to troubleshoot, analyze, and respond to various LMS technical issues.

  • Manage knowledge base and documentation of LMS system processes for SOM; Develop instructional materials and train stakeholders.

  • Build course/clerkship templates, evaluations, gradebook, assessments within the LMS using standardized processes.

  • Liaison with SOMTech as the representative of the Office of Medical Education (OME) to develop additional LMS supplemental tools, workflows, and backend integrations.

  • Serve as initial point of contact for students and interface with VCU Health to ensure appropriate access to the EHR and coordinate training.

  • Stay current in curriculum, accreditation standards, and issues and activities that affect program success by participating in appointed workgroups and committees.

  • Serve as leader of the LMS implementation team and point of contact for all faculty and staff LMS support issues.

  • Extract data from educational systems and generate data visualizations.

  • Identify the need for, develop, and lead other projects as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and online learning technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new services, policies, practices, and procedures

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to work efficiently in a team environment and provide direct administrative support as needed

  • Ability to manage academic processes within and across academic units

  • Capacity to work creatively in both collaborative and independent contexts

  • Ability manage and execute highly complex or specialized projects or processes

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated relationship building skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across all levels and with a varied group of stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards:

  • Master's Degree or 5-7 years of relevant experience preferred

This position works collaboratively with SOM faculty and stakeholders under the supervision of the Director of Evaluation for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) to lead and facilitate the data analytics and research work of the UME data and evaluation team including development and administration of evaluation surveys, program evaluation, interviews, focus groups, statistical analysis, and consultation on organizational or program effectiveness. <br><br> The Senior Research Analyst serves as a point of contact for research and data analytics reporting projects. They work with a variety of database and analytical tools (e.g. SQL, tableau, Python, SPSS) to extract data, build visualizations or dashboards to provide valuable insights for School of Medicine faculty, leadership, or other stakeholders to positively impact processes or outcomes. <br><br> The senior research analyst manages administration of surveys, data analysis, and reporting of results to stakeholders. This position participates in research projects to assist with data analysis using quantitative or qualitative data and help with distributing surveys, coordinate meetings and projects or managing other research assistants.</p><p>Core Responsibilities:</p><p>Responsibility 1 (40%): Data Management</p><p>Oversees the development and maintenance of data collection for evaluation and performance metrics for program oversight and management. Facilitates the shared work and collaboration between the application services team and Office of Medical Education in the design, building and maintenance of data warehouse infrastructure. <br><br> Develops reports and complex visualizations (i.e. data dashboards) using a user centered agile approach. Prioritizes and coordinates with the Office of Medical Education, faculty, or other stakeholders regarding the process for responding to data requests. Develops and implements data quality procedures for data collected and validates statistical reports.</p><p>Contribute to decisions around best practices for data management. Manage data at all levels, including collection, preparation, storage, and analysis. <br><br> Integrate data from multiple data sources or functional areas, ensure data accuracy and integrity, and update data as needed. Prepare and provide data files to stakeholders. Maintain an understanding of institutional practices and protocol to protect confidentiality of participants and update as needed per university guidelines. <br><br> Debug data inconsistencies and raise those when appropriate to the project teams for appropriate remediation. Respond to requests for ad hoc data analysis, as needed</p><p>Responsibility 12 (40%): Evaluation</p><p>Engage with key stakeholders to determine needs and objectives for evaluation or quality improvement. Collaborate with stakeholders to design Logic models and identify appropriate frameworks to guide program evaluation. <br><br> Assist in the development of process improvement strategies along with the implementation and monitoring of appropriate progress. Collect, analyze, and report quantitative and qualitative data back to stakeholders. Contribute to survey development through management and identification of instruments and review of relevant literature. <br><br> Work with team members, educational informatics team, and stakeholders to continually refine and design appropriate measures of evaluation at the course, clerkship, and instructor levels. Manage survey processes, including development and administration.</p><p>Responsibility 2 (10%): Research</p><p>Provide support on externally and internally funded research projects (i.e., literature review, data collection, data analysis, IRB submission). Conduct simple (i.e., descriptive) and complex data analyses (i.e., inferential statistics such as linear and logistic regression) as needed across projects. Develop interview and focus group protocols for qualitative research projects. <br><br> Assist with Identifying potential research studies and funding opportunities. Manage incentives for research participants.</p><p>Responsibility 4 (5%): Project Management</p><p>Oversee scholarship projects with minimal supervision. Coordinate team meetings and manage timelines to conduct research and disseminate results.</p><p>Responsibility 5 (5%): Office Management</p><p>Coordinate team meetings. Manage day-to-day unit finances. <br><br> Manage funding for scholarship within the School of Medicine in collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development. Assist with development of hiring materials for faculty, staff, and research assistants.
