Job Duties

The Director of Laboratory Operations (DLO) leads and manages CET laboratory facilities and equipment related to instructional delivery and research. The Director must demonstrate a high level of professionalism and maintain a positive, supportive working relationship with all laboratory stakeholders including, students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external individuals and groups. The Director's duties span two areas: supervision, planning, and management; and operations and implementation:

Supervision, Planning, and Management 50%

  • Supervise CET Lab Supervisors, conduct annual evaluations, set expectations for performance, manage coverage of CET lab sections, and support professional training and development of Lab Supervisors.

  • Lead CET planning to define, design, and implement the use of CET laboratory space and equipment.

  • Serve as a member of the CET Leadership Council. Participate in strategic planning and day-to-day management of college operations as they pertain to laboratory operations and space utilization.

  • Manage the laboratory operations budget. Prioritize purchases based on demonstrated needs.

    The DLO serves as the project manager for acquisition of new lab equipment including researching product options and vendors, obtaining quotes, initiating bids, finalizing equipment purchases, and completing all facets of installation. Installation includes defining space needs, specifying lab renovation needs, and then coordinating lab renovation activities (in collaboration with ECU Facilities as necessary) to accomplish space renovation to accommodate the equipment. The DLO will be the administrator for purchasing equipment and supplies using funds allocated to the College for the laboratories, such as the Ed-Tech funds, One-Time Funds and other funds allocated by the Dean for laboratory needs.

Operations and Implementation 50%

  • Develop and implement the CET safety program. Create safety programs that comply with appropriate regulations and policies.

    Ensure that all faculty and students have been appropriately trained in safe practices. Ensure that there is an environment and culture of safe behavior in the labs.

  • Administer CET LAB website.

  • Seek feedback from faculty, department chairs, students and staff to promote continuous quality improvement in CET's laboratory operations.

  • Ensure CET laboratories are in operational condition to support course expectations and outcomes. This will include, but not be limited to: (1) purchasing, installing, and maintaining lab equipment, (2) overseeing all CET lab equipment warranties and preventative maintenance overhead expenses, (3) purchasing supplies and tools, (4) tracking inventory of all equipment, tools, and expendable supplies, (5) overseeing the regular cleaning of CET labs, (6) ensuring the safe disposal of waste materials and surplus items following University policies and procedures, (7) ensuring chemical disposal follows the guidelines of the ECU Environmental Health and Safety Department, and (8) other operational tasks assigned by the dean and in compliance with University policies and procedures.

  • Interact with CET departments and other colleges within the university to support effective delivery of lab instruction, which may include, but is not limited to: (1) coordinating with the CET IT Operations Group to requisition, order, and install computing hardware, software, and networking capabilities requires for lab operations, (2) rearranging or reconfiguring laboratories as needed for instructional operations, (3) fabricating special items needed for teaching labs and research needs, (4) making modifications to lab equipment, (5) installing or repairing lab equipment, and (6) any other preparation to ensure that all teaching labs are ready for each lab session so that students may complete planned laboratory activities safely in accord with academic and course requirements.

  • Manage OneCard access to all CET facilities (labs, offices, and other areas) for all students, via submission of authorized access requests to the One Card Office.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master of Science degree in a technology, engineering, or science-related field; OR Bachelor of Science degree in a technology, engineering, or science-related field plus at least two years of work experience in laboratory operations.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

No

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

At least two years of industrial or academic laboratory management experience.

One or more certifications including OSHA/safety, CPR, first aid, and/or respirator fit testing

Teaching experience at the community college or university level, preferably including laboratory instruction experience.

Supervisory experience in an industrial or academic workplace, especially manufacturing or laboratory operations.
