Position Description

Recognized as one of the top law schools in Law and Technology, Legal Writing, and International Law, Seattle University School of Law takes pride in its commitment to excellence and service and the in-person experience. The School of Law is an active and vibrant community that fosters collegiality among students, faculty, and staff. Seattle University School of Law is seeking applications for a Director of International and Graduate Studies. The School of Law currently offers LL.M. and SJD degree programs.

The International & Graduate Studies Program is a small team consisting of the Associate Dean, Faculty Director of the SJD Program and Program Coordinator. This new Director role reports to the Associate Dean for International & Graduate Studies in respect of all areas of the international programs except the SJD Program. The Director position support all facets of the SJD Program in coordination with the Faculty Director of the SJD Program. The Program Coordinator supports the Director position with a focus on aspects of recruiting, admissions, and student events for the LL.M program. The Director will work with and build relationships with other departments of the law school.

Key Responsibilities:

Admissions and Program Support: [25%]

  • In coordination with the Program Coordinator, respond to inquiries from current and prospective students regarding the LLM and SJD programs, curriculum, and application processes.

  • In coordination with the Program Coordinator, conduct an initial review of applications to ensure completeness and assess candidates' academic and professional profiles.

  • Interview candidates and provide recommendations to the Associate Dean for admissions and scholarship awards.

  • Monitor successful candidates' deposits and track student academic credentials.

  • In coordination with the Program Coordinator, collaborate with the International Student Center to ensure timely issuance of I-20 documents.

  • Assemble materials, and participate in information sessions, in-person law school tours, and overseas recruiting trips.

  • Prepare informative PowerPoint presentations on admission statistics, yield rates, and class compositions.

  • Support recruitment and onboarding of visiting research scholars, working closely with faculty colleagues.

Academic Advising and Career Development: [25%]

  • Advise students and graduates via various channels (in person, Zoom, telephone, email) on degree program requirements and bar admission criteria.

  • Conduct advising sessions promptly after successful candidates' deposits and at the beginning of each semester.

  • Maintain an updated information sheet on program requirements.

  • Assist students in defining career goals and navigating professional development opportunities.

Student Success and Student Events: [25%]

  • Contribute to orientation programs and other significant student events, such as welcome parties and graduation celebrations.

  • Collaborate with other departments to host information sessions on academic services, library resources, bar success support, and externship programs.

  • Provide resource referrals to students facing cultural adaptation challenges, homesickness, academic difficulties, or personal issues.

  • Identify and supervise ambassador students in roles such as social media support, peer to peer student support, and program research.

Marketing & International Partnerships: [25%]

  • Manage marketing initiatives and existing partnerships.

  • Develop innovative marketing strategies, including campaigns on LinkedIn and other social media platforms.

  • Promote faculty webinars, student podcasts, media spotlights, and promotional videos.

  • Plan international recruitment, including participating or coordinating faculty participation in international recruitment fairs.

  • Collaborate with international law school partner institutions on recruiting students, exchange programs, and other potential opportunities.

  • Maintain contacts with alumni through events and communications.

  • All the above tasks include administration of both the LL.M and S.J.D. programs. Approximately 90% of the job responsibilities will be for the LL.M program and approximately 10% for the S.J.D program.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and law degree (e.g., J.D. or LL.M.), or master's degree in a related area.

  • At least five to eight years of work experience in the legal field and/or higher education.

  • Familiarity with job market and career trends for international LLMs, or willingness to learn.

  • Commitment to high-quality customer service, responding promptly and accurately to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Comfort speaking in public, ability to successfully lead workshops and presentations to senior leadership team members.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time.

  • Self-starter, able to work independently.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and be discreet when dealing with sensitive information.

  • Ability and willingness to follow University policies.

  • Technology savvy, proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CRM platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with international students or professionals.

  • Experience living, working, teaching, or studying abroad. Multiculturally-aware and able to employ sensitivity when interacting with international graduate students of diverse backgrounds.

  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft SharePoint, and Slate.

  • Fluency in at least one foreign language is a plus.

This position requires work to be performed in person at the Law School.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
