The Director of Instruction will ensure a successful program through planning, organizing, conducting, promoting and developing all golf instruction curriculum as well as developing the skills of all instructors in order to meet the needs of the members and guests. The Director of Instruction must also actively communicate with the golf shop staff to ensure a seamless daily operation. The position requires an individual with a history of demonstrating effective leadership, a strong instructional background, and who possesses outstanding communication and managerial skills.

About Birdwood Golf

Work is under way for a new era of golf at Birdwood Golf at Boar's Head Resort as it partners with legendary PGA Professional Davis Love III and Love Golf Design (LGD) to create a new golf experience that will include 18 new championship golf holes along with a new six-hole par-3 course and putting course. While serving public golfers, members and guests of Boar's Head Resort, the course will also continue to serve as the home course of the UVA men's and women's teams. Job Overview

The Director of Instruction is responsible for organizing, budgeting, developing, promoting, scheduling and conducting golf instructional programs that meet member and guest needs. The Director is responsible for growing annual revenues & profits while making Boar's Head Golf Academy the best instructional academy in Central Virginia.

Some essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage, oversee & direct the total golf instruction & player development programming for Boar's Head Resort.

  • Manage all aspects of the instructional budget; exceeding annual academy revenue, expense & profit goals.

  • Administer, approve and accurately report weekly academy revenues and commissions for all professionals.

  • Create, design, implement and teach all instructional programs.

  • Create short & long term strategies to engage the Resort's key market segments: BHSC & BW Members, overnight hotel guests, juniors, UVA students, UVA faculty/staff and surrounding area residents.

  • Create player development programs to foster both recreational/fun & competitive environments as appropriate for each of Boar's Head Resort's varied market segments.

  • Create and conduct Resort Stay & Learn Packages, Resort Golf Schools, Member Clinics, Junior Camps, Adult & Junior Clinics, Junior Academies, High School Camps, UVA Student/Staff Clinics, Junior League Teams, etc.

  • Partner with Boar's Head Marketing, Director of Sports & Wellness and the Director of Golf to effectively promote all instructional programming.

  • Oversee all lesson & program scheduling; maximizing utilization of all available golf training facilities.

  • Train other facility golf professionals on the academy's overarching teaching philosophies and methodology.

In order to be considered, you must meet the following requirements:

  • PGA and/or LPGA Class A Member in good standing

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in teaching golf

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in overseeing all golf instructional programs at a facility

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office, Golf Genius and GHIN software

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively in both verbal and written formats

  • Proficient in each of the following: teaching, using technology, club fitting, practice facility management

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, early mornings and evenings

The Director provides leadership and oversight of a comprehensive recreation instruction program at the University with responsibility for areas such as wellness, aquatics, tennis, and recreation instruction. The Director has administrative oversight for multiple programs and responsibilities include the organization, development, and promotion of recreation programs. The Director manages multiple facilities and programs through coordinated planning, direction, facilitation, and assessment to achieve University goals. The Director supervises staff, including student employees. The Director of Recreation Programs' responsibilities include: * Directing a comprehensive university recreation instruction program through effective management of resources, fiscal processes, daily operations, and functional area leadership. Program oversight includes youth leagues, clinics, tournaments, summer programs, and general recreation instruction in a variety of areas for both youth and adults. * Developing and monitoring calculated, holistic, outcomes-based programs that meet or exceed the formal and informal recreation instruction program demands of the university community. * Developing strong partnerships with integral university-based academic and community entities to maximize program and participant outcomes. The Director has an important role as the professional face of recreation instruction for the university community. * Leading and overseeing logistics for programs and special events; coordinating registrations for programs; securing facility reservations. * Evaluating and assessing programs by practicing cost containment and statistical tracking for budgets, goals, objectives, and evaluations. * Leadership in the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluation of part-time program area instructional staff and office assistants. * Leading and providing oversight of risk management policies, practices and procedures within safe operational guidelines. * Contributing to positive two-way communication with all staff and customers; assisting with program marketing, publicity and promotion; and helping identify target markets and support program publicity to recruit participants. * Assisting in formulating annual budgetary projections, coordinating departmental proposals, applying managerial accounting to operational budgets for tracking, and analyzing fiscal patterns of revenues and expenditures. * In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. A Bachelor's degree in Athletic or Public Administration; Sports, Recreation, or Park Management; College Student Personnel; Health or Physical Education; or related discipline is required. A Master's degree in a related field is preferred. Experience in lesson planning, skill acquisition, youth sport leagues and teaching or conducting staff training in program area is required.
