Hiram College is seeking a Director of Institutional Grants and Senior Writer. Under the general supervision of the Associate VP for Finance/Controller, the individual holding this position will work collaboratively with colleagues across campus to secure external funds from various sources: foundation and government grants and corporate giving programs. These funds will be utilized to launch and sustain the existing and emerging campus priorities that are currently in play. In addition to assuming pre-award roles, the individual will also assume many post-award roles, including monitoring and reporting functions, etc. In addition to the various responsibilities associated with grants, the individual will be responsible for leading and coordinating key writing projects identified by the faculty and approved by the Academic Dean, including but not limited to donor proposals, constituent communication, and Board of Trustee reports. The individual will work closely with the Associate VP for Finance and the Grants Accountant to provide seamless service to the Grant recipients and provide budget & accounting assistance to the faculty.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work closely with the Faculty and Academic Dean to prioritize Faculty research initiatives and programs that are most likely to attract corporate, foundation, and government support. Identify key corporate, foundation, and government prospects that align with funding priorities.

  • Engage and assist faculty members in the program development and grant preparation process.

  • Prepare and/or supervise the preparation of significant corporate, foundation, and government funding proposals in support of funding priorities and/or invited requests for proposals (RFPs).

  • Approach prospective funding entities verbally, in person, and in writing about giving to Hiram College with a degree of maturity, professionalism, and credibility that instills confidence among constituents. Keep the Development Office and Academic Dean's Offices informed of all funding proposals prior to submissions/approaches.

  • Strengthen ties between the College and representatives of foundations, corporations, and government entities through personal and facilitated interaction.

  • Work closely with the Academic Dean and Faculty members to prioritize fundraising initiatives and programs that are most likely to attract corporate, foundation, and government support.

  • Communicate and implement program strategies in ways that support institutional goals and fundraising priorities without bias towards specific departments.

  • Maintain and report project status and statistics regularly and accurately to the Vice President and Academic Dean, Chief Development Officer, and other stakeholders.

  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer, Controller, and other members of the business office as needed to accept, manage, and steward grants. Work with Faculty, Budget Office, and Grants Accounting to develop and control grant budgets.

  • Oversee appropriate handling and processing of all foundation, corporation, and government gift and grant agreements as well as budgets.

  • Collaborate and communicate with development officers to accomplish shared and coordinated institutional goals.

  • Engage in, and often lead, complex group writing projects.

  • Interact with and respond promptly, professionally, and accurately to requests for information from internal and external constituents.

  • Respond promptly and effectively to requests for information within College and office guidelines.

  • Notify the Associate VP for Finance/Controller, Vice President and Dean, Chief Development Officer, and other Senior Cabinet members as appropriate of concerns, inquiries, and issues requiring special attention.

  • Consider short- and long-term implications and benefits in decision-making.

  • Maintain current knowledge of College policies.

  • Represent the College in a positive, professional manner while maintaining confidentiality, sensitivity, and ethically based principles while working with and within a diverse community.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills; demonstrated ability to transform ideas into a compelling case for support (verbally & in writing)

  • Demonstrated comfort & confidence level with faculty, senior administrators, prospects, and donors; diplomacy and professionalism are essential.

  • Sense of initiative, sound judgment, confidence, maturity, and an ability to work independently.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail combined with abilities to organize, prioritize, solve

  • problems, and negotiate effectively.

  • Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills

  • Willingness to receive constructive criticism and ability to offer it during group writing process.

  • Ability to work under deadline.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Experience

  • Minimum of four years experience in corporate, foundation, and government relations preferred with a demonstrated track record of closing significant gifts and grants.

  • Experience with applicable laws, regulations, and professional standards governing corporate and foundation grant-making.

  • Ability to structure innovative public-private partnership agreements, write grants, and edit work of others.

  • Experience with word processing, Excel, and Banner are highly desirable

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required in a related field.

  • Master's degree preferred.
