The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement (the Harkin Institute) is located at Drake University and serves as a venue and catalyst for dynamic non-partisan research, learning, and outreach to promote understanding of the policy issues to which Senator Tom Harkin devoted his career.

Our primary focus includes four of the issue areas important to our founder, Senator Tom Harkin: labor and employment, people with disabilities, retirement security, and wellness and nutrition.

The Opportunity:

The Harkin Institute is excited to launch a search for a new full-time Director of Operations. We seek an individual who is a motivated and independent professional.

Our team is very collaborative and collegial. The Director of Operations will work closely with all members of the Harkin Institute team and with stakeholders throughout Drake University and the community.

The Director of Operations will work closely with Senator Tom and Ruth Harkin along with the National Advisory Council Chair. The Director of Operations will also work closely with the Executive Director of the Harkin Institute.

This position will have key responsibilities in budget management, event coordination, travel arrangements, overseeing student workers, and collaborating on various Harkin Institute projects and endeavors. A person with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills will thrive in this position. We seek someone who will be excited to engage Drake faculty, staff, students and other visitors to the Institute.

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Problem solving skills and high attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Experience with budget management

  • Willingness to work a flexible work schedule, including some evenings and weekends, when necessary, and to travel on occasion (including some overnight stays).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education, research, and/or not-for-profit organizations.

  • Experience with event management and making travel arrangements

  • Prior supervisory experience

Job Duties:

20% - Support the Executive Director and other Institute staff in researching, evaluating, and recommending programs, projects, and initiatives. Conduct research, planning, and other forms of support for major institute initiatives, fund raising and events. - (Essential)

20% - Manage and oversee the Institute's purchasing, budget, and budgeting process. Monitor and report to the Director on various budget and fiscal issues. Serve as a liaison to university budget offices, the President's Chief of Staff, and Human Resources. Supports new employee on-boarding. - (Essential)

20% - Coordinate, plan, and implement Institute programing, lectures, and events. This includes budgeting, scheduling, and all logistical planning and other related details in consultation with Institute staff, University personnel, vendors, and community partners, as appropriate. Responsible for assuring the success of events, including the managing logistics for high-profile events and high-profile visitors. Manage Institute facilities, including use of office space and related infrastructure. Coordinate outside usage of Institute facilities and manage office space schedules. Ensure the smooth day¬ to-day operation of the Institute's space. - (Essential)

10% - Serve as Director-In-Charge when the Executive Director is out of the office/traveling. - (Essential)

10% - Serve as liaison for external partners, such as Senator Harkin, National Advisory Council, and donors. - (Essential)

5% - Assist Institute staff in researching grant opportunities and completing grant applications. Serve as liaison to Sponsored Projects. Serve as the primary point-of-contact and support for faculty and researchers engaged with the Institute. - (Essential)

5% - Collaborate with and strategically supports the Director and other Institute leaders in managing Institute relationships, including preparation of correspondence, scheduling and planning of meetings, and facilitating outreach. - (Essential)

5% - Hire, train, and supervise the student "chief-of-staff" and oversee all student worker and student intern programs and projects. Direct and coordinate internships. - (Essential)

5% - Perform other duties, as assigned. - (Essential)

Salary & Benefits

The anticipated salary range is expected to be from $55,000 - $62,000 with the final offer commensurate on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Upon successful completion of the onboarding process and ongoing satisfactory performance, a hybrid work arrangement may be negotiable for individuals living within driving distance of campus (pursuant to Drake's Customized Work Arrangement policy) to allow for limited work-from-home/hybrid when allowable from the operational needs of the Harkin Institute.
