Essential Job Duties

The Information Technology (IT) Director oversees the organization's IT operations and ensures the alignment of IT strategies with business goals. This role involves leading & directing the IT staff, developing and implementing IT policies and systems, and ensuring the security and efficiency of IT infrastructure. The IT Director is critical in driving technological innovation and ensuring the organization's IT resources are used effectively and efficiently.

The Director of Information Technology directs, leads, and provides technical support for information technologies (IT) for faculty, staff, postdocs, and students within the six departments of the College of Sciences (henceforth Sciences).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning and Execution:

  • Develop and implement IT strategies that align with the College's goals.

  • Oversee the IT department's operational and strategic planning, including fostering innovation, planning projects, and organizing and negotiating the allocation of resources.

  • IT Operations Management:

  • Manage the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrade, and support of all IT systems, including servers, PCs, operating systems, hardware, software, and peripherals. This includes recommendations for specific hardware and software purchases..

  • Ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of IT infrastructure.

  • Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with the Leadership team and end users regarding pertinent IT activities.

  • Team Leadership and Development:

  • Lead and mentor IT staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.

  • Oversee recruitment, training, retention, and organization of IT staff.

  • Supervise Sciences technical support staff, including students.

  • Budget Management:

  • Develop and manage annual IT budgets.

  • Ensure cost-effectiveness, value for money, and return on investment for IT expenditures.

  • Oversee the procurement of IT assets and services.

  • Security and Compliance:

  • Develop and enforce IT policies and procedures to protect the organization's IT assets and information integrity, security, and privacy.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

  • Provide insight into the technology needs and upgrade of college buildings, classrooms, labs, and other facilities.

  • Project Management:

  • Manage IT projects, ensuring they are completed on time within scope and budget.

  • Coordinate with Sciences departments to understand their IT needs and implement solutions to meet those needs.

  • Stakeholder Management:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for IT-related matters, providing expert assistance related to information technology to faculty and staff within the departments.

  • Liaise with vendors and service providers to ensure timely delivery of services and support.

  • Coordinate university, college, and departmental instructional, research, and administrative computing resources and support.

  • Provide effective, forward-looking guidance and technical assistance to faculty and staff to solve immediate and longer-term IT needs with regard to instruction, research, and administration.

The individual will lead and be an integral part of a team of computing/IT professionals whose missions are to ensure the effective use of IT resources and to advance the College's use of information technologies in instruction, research, and administration. The position will require day-to-day contact with College and University faculty and staff.

This position will also represent and advocate for the IT interests of the College and individual departments within the University's IT Strategic Advisory Committee, Academic IT Directors Committee, Campus IT Directors Committee, the Data Sciences Initiative, and other campus IT agencies.

Other Responsibilities

  • Manage and assist with Sciences' instructional and administrative computing services. This requires the ability to interact productively with Sciences faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and administration.

  • Manage and contribute to IT projects to meet department and College IT needs.

  • Provide effective, forward-looking guidance and technical assistance to faculty and staff to solve immediate and longer-term IT needs with regard to instruction, research, and administration, including recommendations for specific purchases of hardware and software.

  • Provide insight into the technology needs and upgrade of college buildings, classrooms, labs, and other facilities.

  • Supervise Sciences technical support staff, including students.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's degree and at least two years of relevant experience OR

  • Bachelor's degree with at least three years of relevant experience OR

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience

  • For management‐level roles, also include with the above requirements 1‐2 years of supervisory experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience as an IT Director or similar leadership role.

  • Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure, systems, and software.

  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • In-depth understanding of IT systems, architectures, and emerging technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree (or higher) in a natural or mathematical science, engineering, or computer science (or related field) and three years of experience managing IT needs for an academic or research enterprise with at least 50 users.

  • Evidence of substantive continuing education and training in position-relevant areas of IT.

  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.

  • Experience with cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data management.
