Job Summary

Oberlin College seeks a Director of Inclusive Excellence in Undergraduate Research and STEM Education to promote the persistence and success of all students. This is a full-time 12-month, Administrative and Professional Staff position with an excellent benefits package and competitive salary. The start date for this position is July 1, 2024.

Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, highly selective liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio, and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Together, the two divisions enroll approximately 3,000 students.

Oberlin College was the first college in the US to make interracial education and co-education central to its mission. Oberlin College is the recipient of two consecutive HHMI grants and is a leader among liberal arts colleges in the number of graduates who go on to earn PhDs.

Responsibilities

Promote the Inclusive Excellence of Undergraduate Research Across the Curriculum of the College.

● Oversee a team of professionals in support of the integration of undergraduate research into all levels of the Oberlin curriculum across the divisions of Arts and Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Science and Math..

● Coordinate the recruitment, advising, and support activities for students and faculty mentors in the Science and Technology Research Opportunities for a New Generation (STRONG) and other summer undergraduate research opportunities offered by the college.

● Collaborate with the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUF).

Enhance Inclusive Learning Outcomes in STEM Education

● Oversee the Center for Learning, Education and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR) team of professional educators and teaching assistants in support of student learning in foundational STEM courses.

● Collaborate with academic departments and the DEI in STEM faculty committee to develop and implement strategies for fostering retention and excellence in STEM.

Assessment, Reporting, and Grant Writing

● Develop and implement assessment instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of inclusive educational initiatives.

● Develop and implement assessment instruments to evaluate the breadth, depth, and learning outcomes of undergraduate research across the Arts and Sciences.

● In collaboration with Oberlin's Foundation, Government & Corporate Grants team, pursue grant opportunities in undergraduate research and STEM education.

Cultivate Collaborations with Key Stakeholders

● Collaborate with the team of professional educators in the Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) on programming and community building. CELA is dedicated to the integration of classroom and experiential learning in the service of preparing students for lives of meaning and purpose, including addressing major challenges of contemporary life.

● Collaborate with the Offices of Admission, Advancement, Communications, and Institutional Effectiveness in the promotion of undergraduate research and STEM education at the college.

● Collaborate with faculty and staff in the Gertrude B. Lemle Center for Teaching and Scholarship on both strategies for inclusive pedagogy and the incorporation of undergraduate research in academic programs.

Essential Job Functions Marginal Job Functions Required Qualifications

● Master's degree or PhD degree (preferred) in a relevant field.

● Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of inclusive pedagogical practices and their application in higher education settings.

● Experience working with diverse student populations and commitment to promoting equity and inclusion.

● Strong project management skills and the ability to implement strategic initiatives.

● Personnel management experience and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

● Experience with data (quantitative and qualitative) analysis and assessment.
