Director of IBX Electrical Engineering

Job Duties

  • Leading the design engineering team's electrical engineers to provide input to designs for new construction projects, refurbishment and expansion projects, energy efficiency initiatives, and capacity release programs

  • Working on the development, review, and maintenance of global standardization initiatives, global equipment specifications, and design reviews, ensuring best-of-breed solutions are actively discussed, understood and implemented across all of Equinix's countries and regions

  • Working collaboratively on a global basis and undertaking extensive travel in support of Equinix's projects in the Americas and globally in support of standardization initiatives

  • Managing experienced electrical engineering staff to deliver world-class data-center designs with peers in mechanical engineering, architectural and construction disciplines

  • Setting standards and leading technical investigations that develop the most efficient, highly resilient datacenter designs while driving industry leading PUE figures

  • Working with Capacity Management to develop solutions to maximize saleable cab-counts within the IBX's as dictated by the business

  • Supporting strategic deals and working with sales/sales engineers to meet with current and prospective customers, and to fully understand needs and market trends

  • Providing strategic engineering input to global design and procurement standards

  • Conducting R&D associated with advanced power solutions and product and vendor selection

  • Providing electrical engineering input to product management in support of new offerings

  • Working with finance and marketing departments to prepare business cases, financial analyses, and pricing studies for new/proposed products

  • Developing and delivering engineering training via Equinix University, Webex sessions, and on-site training

  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with safe working systems, safety regulations, and quality standards of both the company and the country in which work is undertaken

  • Providing written and verbal instructions to installation contractors / sub-contractors and validating the quality of work

  • Traveling as needed to effectively manage the team and the projects, and to promote communications with the IBX site operations teams.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master's degree in or a related field (or foreign equivalent) and six (6) years of experience in the job offered, or as an Associate, Technical Facilities Manager, Manager Facility Operations,
  • In the alternative, we will accept a Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related field (or foreign equivalent) and eight (8) years of experience in the job offered, or as an Associate, Technical Facilities Manager, Manager Facility Operations, or a related occupation.

Special Requirements

Must have at least three (3) years of experience with the following:

  • Design and safety of Medium Voltage and Low Voltage Electrical Systems in a mission critical environment

  • International and U.S. code requirements and engineering practices for electrical installations to include IEC 60364 (Electrical Installations for Buildings) and the country-specific adoption of the harmonized standard

  • Experience with design practices to comply with IEC 60364 in data center designs, and IEC 61439 (low voltage equipment) and IEC 62271 (medium voltage switchgear) and the data center application of the product ranges of the major electrical manufacturers to these standards

  • Systems design in datacenter buildings

  • Broad critical infrastructure facilities such as laboratories, hospitals, datacenters, or emergency service call centers

  • Multi-discipline design management, including experience in the design and design management of architecture, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, telecom, security and BMS

  • Power systems design and analysis, including fault studies, transient studies and protection co-ordination of data center electrical equipment to include generator and UPS plant.

The control hardware for AO sensors spans a broad range of technologies including low-noise analog, low-jitter digital, embedded systems, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), rf/microwave, and high voltage. An ideal candidate will have an unusually broad background covering these diverse technologies. As Director of Electrical Engineering, you will work with scientists and engineers to define control system requirements and architectures, will oversee the fabrication and testing of AO sensor control hardware, and will support the completed hardware through the performance validation phase.
