The College of Liberal Arts is seeking a Director of Humanities Initiatives. This is a part-time (0.45 FTE), 9-month, professional faculty position.

This position exists within a College and University supported integrated Arts and Humanities structure that includes the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts (PRAx), the Center for the Humanities (CFTH), and the Center of Material Cultures Research in Arts, Archaeology, and Indigenous Studies (CMCR). Although the scale of scope of each of these entities differs, their shared infrastructure supports scholarly and creative residencies, public-facing events and programming, exhibitions, and other humanities efforts. The Director of Humanities Initiatives is directly responsible for shaping the programming, curricula, research programs, and physical space of the CFTH and CMCR. The Director of Humanities Initiatives coordinates research grant applications, cultivates new sources of revenue and philanthropic giving, and works as a full member of a larger team within the integrated Arts and Humanities structure.

Key Responsibilities

25% - Fellowship, Residency, and Research Support Administration

  • Administer fellowship programs for humanities faculty at Oregon State University, including shaping and promoting opportunities, guiding administration and review, and maintaining ultimate authority for the direction and success of such programs.

  • In collaboration with other personnel in the integrated Arts-and-Humanities structure, pursue a strategy for maximizing the role of the humanities in Broader Impacts research funding.

25% - Events, Programming, and Public-Facing Humanities Impact

  • Conceptualize and, with the assistance of Arts-and-Humanities structure staff, enact and implement presentations and lectures, talks, research clusters, reading groups, summer institutes, conferences, workshops, and book-launch events.

  • Determine the humanities-aligned components of annual themes and initiatives pursued within the integrated Arts-and-Humanities structure, including integrations with visual arts exhibitions, history exhibitions, performing arts, and other mediums with rich potential for interpretive and scholarly components aligned with humanities forms of knowledge.

  • Work closely, on a daily or near-daily basis, with academic, curatorial, and administrative faculty attached to the Arts-and-Humanities structure, including those primarily associated with PRAx, with academic schools in the College, and with the two humanities centers

15% - Curriculum Integration

  • In consultation with the relevant Directors of the CLA Schools, maintain responsibility for placing relevant courses in the CMCR space and, in consultation with PRAx staff, maintain partial responsibility for placing relevant courses in the PRAx building.

  • With support from the curriculum coordinator in the Arts-and-Humanities structure, oversee the efforts to integrate relevant humanities content (including events, exhibitions, and other programming) into courses across the University

15% - Promotion, Marketing, Public Advocacy, and Outreach

  • Oversee the representation of humanities initiatives on the web, social media, print media, and other public-facing forums.

  • Build the reputation of humanities initiatives at Oregon State University, including through associations with national humanities consortia, other humanities centers, and regional and national media covering humanities efforts.

  • With support from the Audience Engagement and Education staff in PRAx and in the Arts-and-Humanities structure, develop humanities-associated opportunities for K-12 students and the general public, with a special focus on the events, exhibitions, and other public-facing humanities programming that the position oversees

10% - Capital Project Management

  • Act as the representative of the end-user in the building of the Center for Material Cultures Research in Art, Archaeology, and Indigenous Studies, including interacting with Capital Project delivery and project managers on the construction and architectural teams.

10% - Grant Development, Philanthropic Giving, and Research Funding

  • Pursue additional sources of funding for humanities research, including external grants, internal collaborations, and philanthropic giving.

  • Maintain working relationships with research program administrators in the OSU Division of Research and Innovation and with grant-seeking and grant-writing personnel in the University, College, and OSU Foundation.

  • Apply for a minimum of one initiative-supporting external grant annually and is responsible for encouraging and supporting other external grant seeking.

What You Will Need

  • PhD or terminal degree in a humanities discipline; Tenured Associate/Full professor at OSU.

  • Administrative experience with budget oversight in a University context at the graduate program level or above.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster interdisciplinary and/or collaborative leadership in the humanities.

  • Demonstrated scholarly/creative productivity, accomplishment, and recognition in the humanities - exemplified by publications/creative endeavors, public presentation of research and creative work, professional appointments, or awards.

  • Demonstrated curriculum leadership at the departmental level or above.

  • Prior leadership role in academic events of scale (conferences, disciplinary meetings, etc.).

  • Record of successful grant seeking and/or philanthropic giving.

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity through specific programmatic initiatives.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience in capital project delivery.

  • Prior or current relationships with capital project managers or personnel.

  • Management of resources - internal or external grants - related to capital projects.

  • Named PI on one or more significant, collaborative transdisciplinary grants that relate humanities knowledge to science or technological fields.
