Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary seeks applicants for Director of the Hispanic-Latinx Center. The successful candidate will be a member of the faculty, with some teaching responsibilities in Masters, DMin, and/or PhD programs as part of their field of specialization. The position is open-rank, open-field. This may be a term contract or tenure-track appointment, to be negotiated at the time of appointment.
The successful candidate will be bilingual in Spanish and English. We would prefer for the Director to bring established and deep ties to Central America and Mexico. The Director will be willing to relocate to the area and be ready and able to reach out and connect to Latino/a/x congregations and grass-root organizations in the Chicago area and beyond. A demonstrated commitment to and passion for engaging, supporting, and promoting Latinx people is a vital qualification for this role.
The ideal qualifications for this position are:
Terminal degree in a theological or ministry-adjacent field, allowing candidate to bridge academy and community.
Capacity to accompany Hispanic/Latinx students already at Garrett as they engage in scholarly, ministerial, and vocational growth and discernment.
Commitment to providing theological education at all levels and on various platforms (both face-to-face and virtually) to the Latinx community in the Chicago area (and beyond) as well as alongside partners in Latinx circles, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Training and outreach in migrant ministries to and with established migrants, existing undocumented migrants, and recent arrivals, involving Garrett students, faculty, alums, local churches, and migrant-serving community organizations.
Ability to organize and host public events that bring leading Latinx scholars, policymakers, and social leaders to the community.
Excellent relational skills in support of collaborative and generative work with the entire Garrett faculty and staff and across Garrett centers, as well as with clergy and laity both within and beyond the institution.
Ownership of the seminary's articulation of its vision, mission, and identity.
This appointment will begin July 1, 2024.
